[Biological and surgical aspects of the use of polymers in experimental surgery. 1: implants on the oculo-extrinsic musculature].

Composite sheets obtained reinforcing PHEMA with a tricot PET net have been implanted in rabbits to test their potential applications for cross-eye surgical correction. The mechanical characterization of the composites has been carried out both in static tension and fatigue. The clinical evaluation was performed on twelve adult New Zealand white Rabbits implanting the sheets on the rectus dorsalis muscle of the eye. The material seems to be highly compatible with the surrounding tissue, mechanical satisfying and clinically helpful in correcting many of the pathological conditions connected with strabismus. The long term behaviour of the implanted prosthesis in still under investigation.

Compression of the deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve: clinical and electromyographic findings after a new method of decompression.

Five cases of compression of the deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve were operated upon and the hiatus released by subperiosteal removal of the pisiform bone. The clinical and electromyographical results after a minimum follow-up of eight months showed an improvement in all cases. The authors stress the importance of accurate electromyographic examination for a correct preoperative diagnosis.

Study of a form of pulverulent cataract in a large kindred.

A large kindred (64 members in four generations), affected by a form of apparently congenital pulverulent cataract, was studied for linkage of its gene locus with that of the Fy blood group. No indication of linkage was found. The involvement of the cortex distinguishes this form from the zonular pulverulent cataract (total nuclear) of Nettleship and Ogilvie, the locus of which is probably linked with Fy. A correlation between morphological and genetic heterogeneity, based on the linkage with Fy, cannot be established because of the scarcity of published data.

Polyamines as biological markers of the effectiveness of therapy in acute leukemia.

Urinary polyamine levels were determined in patients with acute leukemia, before and during chemotherapy, in order to confirm whether tumor cell death, due to successful chemotherapy, increases the release in urine and serum of polyamines from tumor tissues (12). Comparison between the polyamine test and cytological data indicated that a rise in urinary spermidine levels occurs during the first 3 days of therapy, both in the responsive and unresponsive patients. However, in the responsive patients the spermidine increase was higher (at 5% significant level) than in the unresponsive ones, and it was coincident with the fall of the blast cells and the revival of normal hematopoiesis. Increases in putrescine levels were also observed, but there were no significant differences (5% level) between the 2 groups of patients. When polyamine determinations were carried out following chemotherapy cycles, the relapse of the disease was always accompanied by an increase in putrescine.

[Pickwickian syndrome].

Respiratory performance tests and EEG and EMG data from two obese patients with ventilatory rhythm disturbances and hypersomnolence are reported. Their insertion within the picture of the Pickwick syndrome is discussed.
