Area distribution of gastric arteries in dog's stomach.

All the 5 gastric arteries supplied both the surfaces of the stomachs except in one case, where short gastric arteries were absent on the ventral surface. The commonest pattern in the size of area distribution by different gastric arteries was seen in 31 cases (69%). Increase in the area of distribution by an artery was at the cost area of distribution by other arteries.

Subsegmentation of the human liver.

Subsegmental patterns in 85 human livers have been studied after preparing corrosion casts of the hepatic duct, hepatic artery and portal vein by injecting coloured butyl butyrate solution. A subsegment was identified by the independence of its vessels and ducts from those of its neighbours. In the present study nine hepatic subsegments have been observed: (1) posterior superior, (2) posterior inferior, (3) anterior superior, (4) anterior inferior, (5) medial superior, (6) medial inferior, (7) lateral superior, (8) lateral inferior, (9) caudate (the caudate lobe and process form a spearate subsegment on the basis of the pattern of their blood supply and biliary drainage). The sizes of the subsegments were very similar in 41 cases (48.23%). In the others, some increase or decrease in the size of one or more subsegments at the expense of neighbouring subsegments was observed. These variations are illustrated.

Pattern of talar articular facets in Indian calcanei.

The variations in the talar articular facets on 401 normal Indian calcanei have been observed and classified. Type 1 calcanei have one continuous facet on the sustentaculum tali extending on the antero-medial corner of the distal part of the calcaneus (268 cases--67%). Type 2 calcanei have two articular facets, one on the sustentaculum tali, and another on the distal part of the calcaneus (104 cases--26%). Type 3 calcanei have a single well defined facet on the sustentaculum tali (21 cases--5%). Type 4 calcanei have a single facet on the sustenaculum tali extending on to the antero-medial corner of the distal part of the calcaneus, but this facet is continuous with the posterior talar facet of the calcaneus (8 cases--2%).

Intrahepatic branching patterns of portal vein. A study by corrosion cast.

Eighty-five corrosion casts of human portal veins were studied. The following observations were made: (1) In 88% of the cases, the portal vein divided into right and left branches, and in 12% of the cases, it divided into the left branch of the portal vein and anterior and posterior segmental n:veins; (2) Anterior and posterior segmental veins were branches of the right branch of the portal vein in 88% of the cases and arose directly from the portal trunk in 12% of the cases. In all cases, the anterior and posterior segmental veins in turn divided into superior and inferior area veins. (3) The left branch of the portal vein underwent a sharp kink leading into two parts: pars transversa nad pars umbilicalis. (4) The lateral superior area vein either sprang from the left side of the kink (69%), or from pars transversa near the kink (16%), or from the left side of pars umbilicalis near the kink (14%). The lateral inferior area vein arose from the left side of pars umbilicalis in all cases. (5) The medical segmental veins originated from the right side of pars umbilicalis. The number of branches varied from two to four. Further division of these into area branches were not fixed. (6) The right portion of the caudate lobe received portal blood either from the pars transversa (68%), or from the right branch of portal trunk (14%), or from the portal trunk (18%). The left portion of the caudate lobe received portal blood always from the pars transversa of the left trunk. (7) The branches to the caudate process arose from right branch of the portal vein in the majority of cases (72%). In the rest of the cases, these arose either from portal trunk (16% cases) or from pars transversa of the left trunk (12% cases).

Vascular segments in the human spleen.

Corrosion casts of human splenic arterial trees revealed the presence of two segments-a superior, and an inferior - in 84% of cases and three segments - a superior, a middle and an inferior - in 16% of cases. These segments are separated by avascular planes.
