[Orbital immunoblastosarcoma (author's transl)].

The new classifications adopted for lymphoid tumors now include a particular type of proliferative process: immunoblastosarcoma. This tumor is not a rare occurrence in the orbit, as shown by the two cases reported, and possesses sufficiently specific clinical and histologicas characteristics to justify its appearance in a separate class. The cytological and histological characteristics of the immunoblasts from which it develops are described. Tumors of this type were previously mostly included in the group of reticulosarcomas, now become obsolete because of poorly defined characteristics of the reticular cell. The prognosis is poor in spite of the chemotherapeutic and radiotherapeutic treatments proposed.

Optimization of the binding of dissociated exfoliated cervico-vaginal cells to glass microscope slides.

In order to monitor the development of a cell dissociation technique, it was essential to utilize the Centrifugal Cytology rotor to produce glutaraldehyde-fixed even cellular dispersions. The Cytology rotor has been improved to insure rapid alignment with the centrifugal field during both acceleration and deceleration, and the fixative is now delivered to the surface of the slide. The dissociation of the cells results in a loss of their adhesion to glass slides. Three bonding agents were tested: (a) Poly-L-Lysine; (b) Mayer's albumin fixative; (c) positively charging the slides with a silicone coating. The results with 65% albumin-coated slides were clearly superior to the other two. The addition of a postfixation step of 95% ethanol/4% polyethylene glycol did not significantly affect the recovery of the cells, but did eliminate some unevenness in the Centrifugal Cytology preparations, flattened the cells and expedited the procedure.

[Total expansion of the orbit for micro-orbitism].

Micro-orbitism which follows the very early arrested development of the optic vesicles hinders the fitting of a prosthesis. A total enlargement of the orbit is proposed which restores the normal dimensions and enables facial symmetry to be re-established. The risks and advantages of this procedure are discussed.

Phlebographic appearance and pathogenesis of venous malformations in the orbit.

A retrospective clinical and radiographic analysis of 20 patients with orbital venous malformations was performed. The malformations were fed by other veins rather than arteries. They may nearly always be demonstrated by orbital or jugular phlebography, though occasionally they will fill only following direct puncture. There appeared to be varied etiologies. A few were related to trauma or to other causes of increased intraorbital pressure. There is an association with periorbital hemangiomas suggesting developmental or congenital origin.

Matching forms as a function of complexity, type of match, and retention interval.

The present experiment tested the hypothesis that nominal processing increases as stimulus complexity increases. Subjects indicated whether two 4- or 12-sided forms, separated by an interval of .5 or 4.0 sec., were the same or different. "Same" responses corresponded to matches for physical or nominal identity. Longer RTs for high complexity than low complexity forms suggest that complexity affects the efficiency of visual processing rather than the occurrence of nominal processing. An interaction between type of match and interval, due to the longer RTs for matches of nominally identical forms at only the .5-sec. interval, indicates that at this interval, matches for physical and nominal identity are made with visual and nominal representations respectively.
