[Effect of total and prolonged starvation on the acid soluble nucleotides in carp liver].

The composition of the acid soluble nucleotide pool of Carp liver was determined by column chromatography, and its changes were followed during prolonged total fast. Total prolonged starvation caused substantial changes in the distribution of hepatocyte free nucleotides. Eleven months of starvation caused a reduction in the concentration of di- and triphosphate nucleosides as well as a diminution of the oxido-reduction of the hepatocyte. Only pyrimidine nucleoside monophosphates remained at concentration approaching those found in regularly fed Carp.

[Similar distribution of the activities of neutral alpha-glucosidase (gamma-amylase) and glucose-6-phosphatase in subcellular fractions from rat and trout livers].

alpha-glucosidases are cellular enzymes, able to split the polysaccharides into glucose. In subcellular fractions from rat and trout hepatocytes, the distribution patterns of neutral alpha-glucosidase and of glucose-6-phosphatase appear to be very similar, i.e., closely linked to the endoplasmic reticulum, and are somewhat related to the particular glycogen. The data suggest a probable role of neutral alpha-glucosidase in cell physiology and in carbohydrates metabolism.

[Effects of insulin on the protein metabolism of carp liver].

Studies on protein metabolism in carp liver under influence of insulin injections have been carried out. Protein turn-over is significantly reduced by insulin; in fact, half-life of tritiated proteins is increased to twice the controls value. Furthermore, electron microscopic studies of nucleolus suggest an enhancement of proteosynthesis. Our findings, similar to those generally described in mammals are in good accordance with the rise of protein amount. With regard to the strong drop of carpe liver glycogen after insulin injection, which had been previously reported, these data could thus indicate that such a paradoxical effect of the hormone is limited to the glycogen metabolism.

[Comparative activities of ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin, and cotrimoxazole in an experimental model of enteritis caused by Salmonella non typhi].

With the use of an in vitro experimental model of enteritis by Salmonella non typhi the efficacy of amoxicillin, cotrimoxazole and ciprofloxacin in the eradication of this fecal pathogen and the prevention of bacteremia was evaluated. Following a fasting period of 48 hours a total of 160 rats were administered 10 UFC of 2 strains of Salmonella non typhi via intragastric tubing. One of the strains was sensitive to amoxycillin and cotrimoxazole (60 rats) and the other strain was resistant to both but was sensitive to ciprofloxacin (100 rats). The antimicrobials were administered 24 hours after the bacterial infection in daily doses for 5 consecutive days. According to the results obtained amoxicillin and cotrimoxazole were ineffective in the eradication of the fecal pathogen indicating an important obstacle in the appearance of bacteremias. To the contrary, ciprofloxacin, even at low doses, eliminated the microorganisms early and demonstrated high efficacy in the prevention of bacteremia in the animals when these results were compared with those of the untreated group.

[Action of calcium antagonists on ureteral dynamics].

We have investigated the action, in vivo, of a calcium antagonist on pyelouretheral dynamics. A surgical model consisting of a bilateral subcutaneous nephrostomy was used, which permits repeated studies in the same animal and simultaneous collection from both pyelouretheral tracts. Anterograde perfusion of a 1.5 ml/min flow gives rise to 7.6 +/- 2.3 contractions per minute of variable amplitude between 12.4 +/- 5.6 mm Hg. Verapamil, in intravenous 5-mg application, significantly reduces (P less than 0.05) the number of contractions per minute but does not mitigate or block the stimulus to a subsequent Norepinefrina injection. We conclude that Verapamil has a moderate but significant effect on pyelouretheral dynamics. We comment on the effect that this drug may have on the pyelouretheral tract when used for hemodynamic purposes and on its potential use in various urological affections.
