Stress in midwifery: a comparison of midwives and nurses using the Work Environment Scale.

Previous research into midwifery has identified a number of potential sources of stress without attempting to understand the variables that might contribute to it. The study sample was drawn from a population of registered nurses and midwives and compares the work environment of 29 midwives with 180 nurses, using the Work Environment Scale Questionnaire. Significant differences were found between midwives and nurses for involvement, supervisor support, autonomy, work pressure and clarity of roles. These results have the potential for forming the basis of future research.

The Work Environment Scale: a comparison of British and North American nurses.

Previous research into stress in nursing has identified different sources of stress for different specialties without specifying the source of that stress or providing comprehensive understanding of the variables that might contribute to it. This study examines the work environment of 209 nursing staff using the Work Environment Scale. Significant differences were found between a UK sample and the original American norms. Further research highlighted significant interactional effects between demographic variables and the subscales of the WES, and these may form the basis for future research.

Post-registration degrees in nursing: a time for evaluation.

There is a steadily growing number of post-registration degrees for registered nurses being offered by universities and polytechnics. Despite this fact, there is little published research-based literature which investigates the career paths and plans of these graduates and the value and function of this type of degree course. This paper reviews the literature relating to post-registration degrees in nursing and discusses the reasons registered nurses may decide to undertake a post-registration degree, the possible benefits of studying for and attaining a post-registration degree and highlights the present position of master's degrees in nursing. Reasons are suggested as to why a comprehensive evaluation of post-registration degree courses in nursing is required.

The effectiveness of levamisole hydrochloride in the treatment of adult Dirofilaria immitis.

Dogs infected with D. immitis were treated with oral levamisole hydrochloride at various dose rates over different durations. Clinical toxicity, haematological and biochemical parameters, body weight and food intake were recorded and filarial mortality estimated at autopsy. All filariae were dead in dogs treated at 10 mg/kg body weight twice daily (12 hourly) for 14 days, with minimal clinical toxicity being seen during the treatment period.

The author explores how such attitudes affect HIV-positive people, and offers advice to nurses on how they can help to establish more constructive relationships with these patients.
