Gel permeation chromatography as a stability-indicating assay for human serum albumin.

It has been known for a considerable period of time that preparations of normal human serum albumin contain a amount of polymers and their formation appears to be related to the stability of human albumin solutions. This report describes a gel permeation chromatography technique using Sephadex G-150 to separate albumin molecules into monomers, imers, and polymers. In order to determine if this system could detect small changes in albumin solutions, 5% solutions of albumin were heat denatured and assayed. The changes which resulted from the heat denaturation were easily measurable. Additional experiments using 5% and 25% albumin solutions showed that this system could also detect changes in the amount of aggregation which occurred in these solutions with time. It therefore appears that this technique may be of value in assessing the stability of albumin solutions as measured by the formation of protein aggregates.

[Effect of 17 alpha hydroxy-20 beta dihydroprogesterone and progesterone on maturation and ovulation in vivo and on the plasma level of gonadotropic hormone t-GtH in rainbow trout Salmo gairdneri].

Ovulation occurred 5 to 9 days after injection of 2 mg/kg 17 alpha-hydroxy-20 beta dihydroprogesterone (17 alpha-20 beta Pg) in rainbow trout with oocytes in which the germinal vesicle was subperipheral. Whereas oocyte maturation was initiated by 17 alpha-20 beta Pg without an immediate increase in the concentration of t-GtH, in controls an increased level was found to coincide with initiation of the process and the concentration of t-GtH was higher at all stages. Progesterone treatment was less effective.

The University of Michigan integrated premedical-medical program.

The University of Michigan Medical School and the College of Literature Science and the Arts are now conducting a six-year program for recent high school graduates which integrates a liberal education and the work necessary for the M. D. degree. There is a single admission point in the spring for seniors in high school. Personal characteristics are heavily emphasized in the admissions process. A number of innovative course sequences have been developed for the program. A variety of evaluation studies are being conducted and will be available as they are completed.

Ossicles of knee menisci. Report of seven cases.

Seven cases of ossicles in the posterior horn of the medial meniscus revealed that: trauma is not necessarily an antecedent; some knees with ossicles are asymptomatic; some knees may be treated conservatively and without surgery; ossicles can be distinguished from loose bodies under fluoroscopic examination. Microscopically the ossicles are living bone. Although the etiology is not proven, perhaps merit should be given to the theory of a vestigial or sesamoid-like bone.

Medicines evaluation and monitoring group: central nervous system effects of pentazocine.

Hospital-based drug monitoring facilities have been used to investigate the frequency of perceptual disturbances in inpatients receiving pentazocine and the occurrence of dependence upon this drug after discharge from hospital. A pilot study was carried out in which seven out of 70 hospital inpatients receiving pentazocine reported such episodes, while in a prospective study, 9 out of 132 patients receiving pentazocine and 1 out of 112 receiving cyclimorph, dihydrocodeine, or pethidine reported their occurrence. A total of 135 patients who received pentazocine for disorders likely to require longterm analgesia were followed up for six months after their discharge from hospital. 24 had received pentazocine after discharge; two required an increase in dosage and four expressed a preference for pentazocine.
