Activity, passivity, self-denigration, and self-promotion: toward an interactionist model of interpersonal dependency.

Although dependency in adults is inextricably linked with passivity and submissiveness in the minds of many theoreticians, clinicians, and researchers, evidence has accumulated which suggests that in certain situations, dependency is actually associated with high levels of activity and assertiveness. Three experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that when a dependent person is concerned primarily with getting along with a peer, he or she will "self-denigrate" (i.e., will utilize strategies that ensure that a peer will be evaluated more positively than he or she is on a laboratory task), but when a dependent person is concerned primarily with pleasing an authority figure, he or she will "self-promote" (i.e., will adopt strategies that increase the likelihood that he or she will be evaluated more positively than a peer on a laboratory task). This hypothesis was supported in all three experiments. Theoretical implications of these findings are discussed, and an interactionist model of interpersonal dependency is briefly described.

Familial adenomatous polyposis and inflammatory bowel disease associated in two kindreds.

We describe two families in which some members are affected by familial polyposis syndrome: in one family a case of ulcerative colitis and in the other a case of Crohn's disease were found. This is the first report about this family association, but in our opinion the fact that two cases have been found in one series suggests that this association could be more frequent than reported so far. The research for a genetic pattern of inflammatory bowel disease could be addressed towards chromosome 5.

[Role of surgery for non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract].

From January 1974 to December 1990, 619 patients were submitted to surgical treatment for gastrointestinal carcinoma: 10 cases (1.61%) of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas were observed (4 of the stomach, 3 of the small intestine, 1 of the colon, 2 of the rectum). There were 5 men and 5 women, mean age 57.1 years (range 34-80). In 6 patients the diagnosis was performed with radiological investigations, in 4 with ultrasonography too. Endoscopy biopsy was unfit for diagnosis in the gastric localizations, while it was positive in both rectal localizations. Seven patients were operated and no postoperative morbidity or mortality was observed. The role of surgery is discussed, diagnosis for staging and therapy alone or associated with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy.

[Foreign bodies and injuries of the rectum].

Personal experience of 33 cases of foreign rectal bodies introduced transanally with or without associated lesions is reported. After examining the principles of diagnosis, stress is laid on therapy and personal experience and it is suggested that more energy should be applied to extracting the foreign body transanally even using more or less deep anaesthesia, so avoiding the need for abdominal surgery.

[Current trends in the diagnosis and therapy of anal pruritus. Review of 238 cases].

Perianal pruritus may be caused by a variety of factors. Of these, the most frequently occurring are proctological, infections, dermatological, dietary, and systemic. The results of a study carried out on 238 patients from 1980 to 1984 are reported. The survey was carried out with the aim of defining the frequency of pruritus in relation to the triggering cause, to sex and to age. It is emphasised that diagnosis is often difficult and requires the measurement of the following parameters: blood glucose levels, blood, nitrogen levels, ESR, haemochrome, hepatic functions, in addition to a gynaecological examination, analysis of faeces, proctocolonoscopy, skin biopsy and other tests. These are carried out to determine whether anal pruritus is a symptom of a systemic disease, or whether it is brought about by local causes. Treatment measures adopted are reported. Treatment is mainly symptomatic and aetiological for cases caused by local disturbances.

[Epidemiologic-statistical data on chest injuries: review of 181 cases].

The Authors report their casuistry about thoracic traumata (181 cases), they had the opportunity to observe from 1972 up to 1983. They illustrate the most interesting epidemiologic data, such as sex and average age of patients, causes of trauma, hurted anatomic formations of thorax, association with traumata in a different place. At last, as a conclusion, they remark the exitus occurred in 5.5% of thoracic traumata.
