Characteristics of a cream of cheese with bacon frozen soup concentrate.
The starch granules of both Purity W, a modified waxy cornstarch, and wheat flour were affected by processing, refrigeration, freezing, and reheating. The major change in starch granules shown by scanning electron micrographs was the trend towards greater deformation of the starch granule and, apparently, subsequent greater homogeneity of the mixture. Sensory evaluation revealed a statistically significant difference (p of less than 0.05) only in overall acceptability of the fresh vs. the frozen soup. The other quality characteristics of texture acceptability, consistency, and syneresis were not statistically (p of less than 0.05) different.
Water immersion in nephrotic syndrome.
Five adults suffering from nephrotic syndrome were immersed up to the neck in 1.3 m of warm water for four hours. There was a mean weight loss of 2 kg; 1 kg was lost through sweat and 1 kg was lost through urine. Thirty-five millimoles of sodium was excreted in the urine in four hours, 15 times more than on control days. The urine became hypotonic to plasma in the first two hours of immersion. Aldosterone levels did not change on immersion in three patients, but fell from elevated levels in two others. It is concluded that water immersion up to the neck in nephrotic patients warrants further investigation as a therapeutic agent in those cases that are not responding to conventional diuretic therapy.
Absence of anemia in maintenance hemodialysis.
Anemia is usual in untreated uremia. Persistent anemia is thought to be universal in uremic patients treated by maintenance hemodialysis (MH). A retrospective chart analysis of 549 patients on (MH) at five facilities in Brooklyn, found that eleven (2%) of these patients had a hematocrit (Hct) in the normal range (40%). To distinguish this subset of patients from the majority of MH, we compared both groups for: (1) etiology of the renal disease, (2) presence of residual renal function, (3) dialysis prescription, (4) decreased arterial O2 saturation, (5) greater use of vitamins or anabolic steroids, (6) absence of parathyroid disease. The relatively high hematocrit was not explained by any factor evaluated in this small subset of MH patients.
Isolation of a morphologically-transformed epithelial cell-line from rat kidney following an in vivo dose of dimethylnitrosamine.
In an in vivo-in vitro system, a rat kidney epithelial cell-line was isolated into continuous culture 48 h after a single administration intraperitoneally of dimethylnitrosamine (DMN). The dose used, 60 mg/kg, was known to induce approximately a 40% incidence of renal cortical epithelial umors, in addition to a much higher incidence of renal mesenchymal tumors. The cell-line was established from several persisting islands of epithelial cells which were cultured in Leibowitz medium supplemented with various-growth enhancing agents and periodically, the antifibroblastic agent cishydroxyprolin. Through succeeding subcultures, the cells retained an epithelial morphology and at confluence piled-up into 3-dimensional ridges and domes above the monolayer. The cells were characterized by continuous growth in culture, the ability to form colonies at very low seeding rates, loss of anchorage-dependence as determined by growth in semi-solid media and formation of multicellular aggregates in suspension culture, and agglutination in the presence of conconavalin A. These altered properties of growth and behavior indicate that the renal epithelial cells constitute a morphologically transformed line. As such, they may represent the same target cell population from which DMN-induced epithelial tumors arise in the rat kidney.

Serogroups and biotypes among beta-hemolytic streptococci of canine origin.
A study of hemolytic streptococci from clinical infections in dogs revealed the presence of four serogroups, with one to four biotypes in each, based on carbohydrate fermentation patterns. Of 254 isolates tested, 206 belonged to Lancefield group G, 30 to group C, 7 to group E, and 1 to group A. Ten isolates could not be grouped. Reactions on the three key carbohydrates, lactose, trehalose, and sorbitol, revealed four biotypes each in groups G and C, and two in group E and among the ungroupable cultures. The most common pattern, seen in 154 cultures, was lactose fermentation with no action on trehalose and sorbitol, and corresponded to that described for Streptococcus canis (Stafseth et al., J. Am. Vet. Med. Assoc. 90:769-781, 1937). Most of the strains originated from skin, subcutaneous and wound infections, genitourinary lesions, otitis externa, and respiratory disease. Data suggest that group G streptococci may be preferentially parasites of the urogenital tract.

Apamin blocks certain neurotransmitter-induced increases in potassium permeability.
Apamin is a neurotoxic polypeptide of known structure isolated from bee venom. Shuba and coworkers have recently shown that it abolishes the hyperpolarising action of externally-applied ATP on visceral smooth muscle (guinea pig stomach and taenia coli) as well as the hyperpolarisation (inhibitory junction potential) that follows stimulation of the non-adrenergic inhibitory nerve supply to these tissues. As it has been proposed that ATP is the neurotransmitter involved in the latter response, Vladimirova and Shuba tentatively concluded that apamin is a specific postsynaptic blocking agent of this non-adrenergic, possibly 'purinergic', inhibition. We have confirmed the important observation that nanomolar concentrations of apamin reduce inhibition by ATP and by non-adrenergic nerve stimulation, but further experiments suggest that, rather than acting as a specific blocker of ATP receptors, apamin inhibits the increase in potassium permeability caused by a number of agents, including ATP.
Thinking about retirement? Pay now and you may live a little more freely later.
Money, money, money. The favourite soft toy of a well-heeled few can be a cross that the less gilded carry through their working life into retirement. Author doles out some advice for the pension conscious, especially those who have just stumbled on the fact that retirement is upon them, in fact just around the next corner.
Endometrial cancer and estrogen use. Report of a large case-control study.
Our case-control study of the relation between estrogen use and endometrial cancer involved 451 cases and 888 controls. The overall risk of endometrial carcinoma was sixfold for estrogen users as compared with nonusers; long-term users (greater than five years) had a 15-fold risk. Excess risk was present for both diethylstilberstrol and conjugated estrogens. The risk associated with cyclic use was as great as that for continuous use. Increased risk was associated with estrogen use for all histologic grades of the tumor. The risk of advanced-stage carcinoma was fourfold for estrogen users, but rhe confidence interval was wide, and this question requires further study. Finally, this investigation contradicts the speculation that the association between this cancer and estrogen use can be explained by swifter diagnosis for estrogen users, misclassification of estrogen-related hyperplasia or treatment of early symptoms of the tumor with estrogen.
Adriamycin, BCNU plus cyclophosphamide (ABC) in advanced carcinoma of the head and neck.
Forty-four patients with advanced carcinoma of the head and neck were treated with cyclophosphamide, 400 mg/m2 plus BCNU, 100 mg/m2 day 1 followed by adriamycin 40 mg/m2 day 2, with therapy repeated every 4 weeks. Of 31 evaluable patients, there were 1 complete response, and 10 partial responses (35%). Four of 8 patients without prior chemotherapy had complete or partial responses, as did 7 of 23 patients who had received prior chemotherapy. The mean survival for patients with partial responses was 8.8 months, and for patients with stable disease was 7.8 months. The mean time to progression for patients with partial responses was 5.4 months, and for patients with stable disease was 3.2 months. Granulocytopenia was the dose limiting toxicity, and patients with increasing degrees of myelosuppression appeared to have higher quality responses and longer survival. The ABC treatment program is useful in the palliative management of patients with advanced carcinoma of the head and neck.
