[Plasma concentrations and urinary excretion of gonadotropins in azoo and oligospermia. Relationship with spermatogenesis and plasma concentration of androgens (author's transl)].

Plasma concentrations and urinary excretions rate of gonadotropins, testosterone, delta 4-androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone and 17 and 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone plasma concentrations have been studied in 69 patients with oligo or azoospermia and compared with results obtained in 30 normal control subjects. A sperm count and a caryotype have been done in all patients and a testicular biopsy in 35. Analysis of the histo-hormonal correlations does not show a particular stage of spermatogenesis associated with a modification in FSH production. There is a quantitative relationship between spermatogenesis and FSH production. Plasma testosterone is low and LH production normal in excretory azoospermia. In the other patients plasma testosterone is also low but associated with an increased production of LH. Finally there is a direct relationship between urinary excretion of LH and FSH in both normal subjects and patients, suggesting a modulation by specific factors of a common regulation of the secretion of both gonadotropins.

[Medical treatment of Graves' disease. Long term results (author's transl)].

Out of 115 patients with hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease who were treated for 18 months methimazole alone, only 35% had remained in remission for at least 3 years after cessation of antithyroid therapy. A significant correlation was found between recurrent hyperthyroidism and the presence antithyroid antibodies (microsomal antibodies) in the sera of these patients. Periodic assessments of TSH responses to TRH and thyroid suppressibility may be useful in determining the duration of medical therapy.

[Non verbal approach in transcultural psychiatry (author's transl)].

The author reports his one year experience of psychiatry in People Republic of Congo (Brazzaville). It lead him to a new regard on his own culture with a final reinforcement of it and to the feeling that, whatever his good will, he will never completely understand the mental processes and the myths of this african patients. The cultural environment induces specific features of african mental illness. The western psychiatrist must discard almost all attempts of verbal communication and must relie on somatic expression and ritual practices to create conditions allowing use of modern chemical treatments.

[Bovine hypodermyiasis: a quasi sequential procedure for observation of live-stock for surveillance of recrudescence in eradicated zones].

A quasi-sequential sampling plan for observing cattle was undertaken in the framework of Hypoderma bovis epidemiological surveillance. This plan enabled us to test whether or not the prevalence of Hypoderma bovis is within a threshold p0 chosen for an eradication scheme or for qualifying a zone. The sampling cost was reduced but the estimation precision remained acceptable. The sensitivity of monthly controls with respect to the reference period (April, May, June, July) was studied from data observed over 6 consecutive years in Côtes d'Armor, France. The best ratio sensitivity/sampling cost was obtained with a unique counting plan in June where 48% (36 to 60%) of the herds found to be infested during the reference period were detected. The test procedure concerning the prevalence level was then adapted to take into account the sensitivity of the observation method. This is tantamount to reducing the threshold p0.

Comparative efficacy of different insecticides in the treatment of cattle hypodermosis in north-eastern Algeria.

The efficacy of different drugs (microdose of ivermectin, doramectin and moxidectin at the recommended doses and topically applied rotenone) against the first, second and third instar larvae of Hypoderma bovis and H. lineatum was studied in cattle in the El Tarf area (northeastern Algeria). Before performing the efficacy trials, the life cycle of the warble fly was studied at the slaughterhouse between July 1993 and June 1994. This survey revealed that both species of warble fly were present in this area: L1 larvae of H. lineatum were found around the oesophagus between August and January, whereas L1 larvae of H. bovis were observed around the spine from November until March. Warbles were present under the skin from the end of October until May. The nymphal phase took place between February and May. As a result of this study the authors recommend applying chemoprophylaxis (treatment against L1) in September. This work also confirmed the excellent efficacy of avermectins and milbemycins against the three instar larvae of Hypoderma sp. under the field conditions prevailing in Algeria. Rotenone has a lower efficacy (95%) which is limited to the second and third instar larvae. However, this drug appears useful in dairy cattle.

Lack of humoral and cellular responses against glutathione S-transferases in Fasciola hepatica experimentally infected sheep.

Anti-Fasciola hepatica excretory-secretory products (FhESP) and anti-glutathione S-transferase (GST) immune response were studied in sheep infected with 250 F. hepatica metacercariae. In FhESP, 29 proteins with molecular masses (m) of 10-200 kDa were identified by SDS-PAGE. GST m were 26.7 and 27.2 kDa. The anti-FhESP humoral response was precocious and increased throughout the infection. FhESP contains several immunoreactive antigens but no anti-GST antibodies were detected either by ELISA or western blotting. The anti-FhESP cellular response increased precociously and fell after the second week of infection but no cellular response against GST was observed.
