[Economic management of institutional pharmacies of the city of Rosario. Quality indicators proposal].

OBJECTIVE: To compare structures, procedures and results of the pharmaceutical management of institutional pharmacies in the city of Rosario (Argentina), to define the current situation and thus recommend changes. METHOD: Descriptive study, using a questionnaire and quality indicators of an Accreditation Program of Hospital Pharmacies. Evaluated dimensions: selection, acquisition, reception, storage and stock control of drugs and medical devices. Data was collected for a one-year-period in order to obtain indicators. After tabulation, data was discussed in meetings with all the pharmacists that participate in this study, in order to evaluate the situation and propose changes for the Pharmacies, as well as to evaluate the Program based on usefulness of these indicators. RESULTS: The general results illustrate how each institution has different health policies. 43.2% of indicators were answered, 67.6% reached standard values. CONCLUSIONS: This work allowed for an exhaustive analysis of the current situation. The pharmacists made proposals and unified criteria in order to obtain an improved use of the economic resources of each institution.

[Observations in sclerosing cholangitis].

Sclerosing cholangitis is a rare liver disease of unknown etiology with a slow but progressive course. The authors report their experience and illustrate some surgical procedures to preserve bile duct patency in view of a liver transplantation program.

[4,000 surgical operations for calculosis of the biliary tract. II. Bilio-digestive shunts: indications and results].

Personal experience with biliodigestive derivations in calculosis of the principal bile way is reported. The operating technique is presented and indications and results discussed. It is concluded that biliodigestive anastomosis must be carried out with an appropriate technique and in the presence of particular bile duct lesions, primarily choledochic ectasia.

[Optical and electron microscopic methods for counting respirable fibers of asbestos: considerations on relative standards].

The paper reports experience of the use of optical and electronic microscope methods for assessment of the concentration of airborne asbestos fibres and their respective identification. The results described are derived from the extensive experience of three Italian university institutes, which have used optical methods of observation for over 35 years (phase contrast technique, at times associated with the use of polarized light) and have examined altogether about 11,000 samples of airborne dust and fibres. After considering in more detail certain values of asbestos fibre concentrations in various environments, measured parallely with optical and electronic microscope, and assessing their basic comparability, attention is drawn to a number of ambiguities and contradictions contained in Law D.M. 6/9/1994, which tends to discourage the use of the optical microscope (especially using the phase contrast technique), without however taking into consideration the improved cost/benefit ratio in the assessment of respirable asbestos fibres present in working and living environments. On this topic, attention is drawn to the fact that the limits for occupational exposure to asbestos, proposed and/or adopted in the international scientific literature, are based on the numerical count of fibres with the optical microscope using the phase contrast technique (MOCF).
