The article begins by considering the physician as a professional technically qualified to respond to a social need. First, the terms are defined: manpower equals the medical labor resource and the work of the physician in private practice, in the employ of a public or social security establishment, or in private firm. The article then examines the production system of medical care services in Argentina, where the functions of the State have been redefined since the depression of 1929 and have become more interventionist and care-oriented. This section describes three points: the organization and financing of medical care in three subsectors (public, social security, and private), advances in medical knowledge and technology, and the consequences for practice (specialization, subspecialization, and employment in large institutions). This part of the article stresses the effects on medical practice of introducing complex technology, and the special situation in Argentina where relatively highly qualified professionals are employed in auxiliary tasks. In the section specifically on the study of the labor market, relations between supply and demand care considered. This relationship depends on two interrelated social processes: medical education and medical practice. The possible relationships between these processes are examined, and the research is based on the assumption that there are many markets, each with its own supply of and demand for services and all differing in the sources of their financing. This section describes the characteristics of medical work in each subsector and their relationship to training. The section on the interconnection between the labor market and training describes the characteristics of undergraduate and graduate training and how they bear on the professional's placement on the labor market. Among the article's provisional conclusions, the authors emphasize the atypical character of this labor market, the social values involved, and the role of the State, which cannot be delegated, in the allocation of resources for health and in regulating the training and employment of medical human resources.

Risk factors of clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis are compared in prospective studies, including the Paris Prospective Study I. Cholesterol and blood pressure are linked to the 3 manifestations of coronary heart disease (angina, infarction and sudden death), but tobacco is not linked to angina. Peripheral vascular diseases are associated with tobacco and, to a lesser extent, with blood pressure; the association with serum cholesterol is inconstant. Stroke is especially linked to blood pressure, but the association with cholesterol or tobacco differs between populations. The etiology of atherosclerosis seems variable according to clinical manifestations and populations.
Embryonal carcinoma cells, the stem cells of teratocarcinomas, are a convenient model system for the study of embryonic development and cell differentiation. We established the pluripotent teratocarcinoma cell line TCE from embryoid bodies of teratocarcinoma strain OTT6050. The feeder independent cell line was characterized with regard to karyotype, differentiation capacities, developmentally regulated gene products, such as alkaline and acid phosphatase, cell surface markers, and by intermediate filament proteins. These parameters are discussed with respect to the developmental potency of the cell line TCE.

A micromethod for the determination of alkaline phosphatase activity in a few cells from two cell lines, undifferentiated embryonal carcinoma F 9 cells and differentiated embryonal mouse fibroblast STO cells, is presented. In F 9 cells a 4- to 5-fold higher activity of alkaline phosphatase than in STO cells extrapolated from 10 cells was evaluated and compared with the results of the specific activity from cell extracts of these two cell lines. The significance of the results and the application of the method is discussed.

When faced with a patient with a lump or lumps in the breast, it is clear to the general surgeon how the situation should be handled. However, if the patient has already had multiple breast biopsies, then the surgeon is less certain. If the patient also has nodular or granular breasts, the choice of correct treatment becomes almost speculative. It is because of these uncertainties that this article has been written. A series of suggestions on the sequential steps to be taken in the treatment of women with precancerous or cancerous lesions, with emphasis on reconstruction of the breast, is listed.

Radiographs were available for study for 466 of 2,000 patients with primary gout who were followed clinically for as long as 30 years. The radiographic manifestations at various stages of the disease and the effect of therapy were studied in 80 patients. New radiographic signs, such as lace pattern, intracortical lesions, and subchondral compressions, are emphasized as well as the frequency of tophaceous lesions affecting the dorsum of the feet.

Four cases of primary pneumatosis coli which exhibit a changing pattern of severity and distribution including cure without therapy are described. No previous similar cases with radiographic correlation have been found by the author in the literature. The pathogenesis of pneumatosis coli is discussed and the literature is reviewed.
The authors report four cases of angio-immunoblastic lymphadenopathy, presenting with cutaneous lesions: these have a tumoral presentation in two cases while in the other two, the polymorphic aspect of the cutaneous lesions is reminiscent of a toxidermic eruption. In contrast to the relative clinical polymorphism, the pathological findings are monomorphic, i.e., in all cases, there was a vascular proliferation together with a more or less dense cellular infiltrate consisting of cells indistinguishable from those involving the abnormal lymph nodes.
