[Frequency of lung asbestos bodies in autopsy material at Udine].

Following chemical digestion of the pulmonary tissue, asbestos bodies were sought in 50 random necropsies carried out at Udine. The age of the subjects examined, 24 men and 26 women, was between 23 and 90, and 43 cases were older than 50. A positive finding was observed in 44 cases (88%).

Relationship between acute toxicity in mice and polymorphic forms of polyene antibiotics.

Marked differences in LD50 values were found between various batches of polyene antibiotics (mepartricin and nystatin) after intraperitoneal administration in suspension to mice. Such differences do not seem attributable to the particle size but to different molecular spatial arrangements of the products, which modify their solubility and biological availability. In the samples obtained by chemical treatments of some batches of the polyene substances, it has been possible to change the toxicity drastically and then to bring it back to its original value.

Influence of postural changes on the glomerular filtration rate in nephroptosis.

The influence of postural changes on renal function was determined in 13 patients with nephroptosis and in 5 normal subjects by measuring GFR in the erect and supine positions. The result indicate that GFR was reduced in the erect position in 10 of 13 patients with either unilateral or bilateral nephroptosis whereas GFR was increased in the erect position in 4 of 5 patients without renal disease. One patient with bilateral nephroptosis and renovascular hypertension was studied before and after surgical correction of his disease. The observations indicate that patients with nephroptosis may have significant reductions in renal function when they assume an upright position, and suggest that GFR measurements in the supine and erect position in patients with nephroptosis can be helpful in evaluating this disease.

Immunologic response to A and B erythrocytic antigen.

Immunologic response to A and B erythrocytic antigen stimulation was studied in patients with pemphigus, in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and in normal subjects. Patients with pemphigus and normal subjects demonstrated a similar specific response (isohemagglutinins). A comparison between patients with pemphigus and SLE showed higher titers in the latter. Intercellular antibody titers increased after stimulation; corresponding titers were unaffected by isohemagglutinin absorption. Direct immunofluorescent studies showed IgG deposits in the intercellular spaces of the skin of the patients with pemphigus. However, C3 was found in the same sites in only three cases of pemphigus erythematosus. Immunofluorescent studies for IgG at the basal membrane were positive in only two cases of pemphigus erythematosus. Immunologic response of patients with pemphigus was similar to that of controls; however, it differed from that of patients with SLE.

A soluble mepartricin complex (SPA-S-222) of potential oral and parenteral utility in fungal and protozoal infections.

Acute toxicity and absorption data of a soluble complex of mepartricin with sodium laurylsulphate (SPA-S-222) active against C. albicans and T. vaginalis are reported. The results demonstrate an improved bioavailability with respect to the insoluble substance. Preliminary clinical trials proved the good tolerance of the substance and its effectiveness in oral treatment of vaginal trichomoniasis.

Reduction in myocardial ischemia with nitroglycerin or nitroglycerin plus phenylephrine administered during acute myocardial infarction.

Nitroglycerin reduces ischemic injury during acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in dogs--an effect that is potentiated when drug-induced hypotension and tachycardia are prevented with phenylephrine. To determine the effectiveness of nitroglycerin, alone or with phenylephrine, during AMI in man, 12 patients (five or whom had left heart failure) were evaluated by summing ST-segment abnormalities (sigmaST) from 35 precordial electrodes. The seven patients without heart failure did not benefit consistently from nitroglycerin alone; however, addition of phenylephrine to abolish nitroglycerin-induced arterial pressure reduction uniformly diminished sigmaST (4.9 to 3.2 mv; P less than 0.05). In patients with heart failure, nitroglycerin alone consistently reduced ischemia (5.8 to 4.4 mv, P less than 0.05); addition of phenylephrine often partially reversed this effect. Thus, administration of nitroglycerin, alone or with phenylephrine, can reduce myocardial ischemic injury during AMI in man; however, the response to phenylephrine depends on the presence or absence of left ventricular failure before treatment.

Chemical and pharmacological investigations of constituents of Eleutherine bulbosa (Miller) Urb. (Iridaceae).

Eleutherin and eleutherol extracted from bulbs of Eleutherine bulbosa (Miller) Urb. (Iridaceae), collected in the Amazonian jungle and grown in Italy, were tested for biological properties. The extraction procedure and the results of antibacterial, cytotoxicity, and pharmacological assays are reported. Eleutherin has a weak and transient effect of decreasing the prothrombin time (in vivo in rats) and a weak antibacterial activity on Bacillus subtilis (in vitro).

Effects of dobutamine on atrioventricular conduction.

Dobutamine, a new beta-stimulating catecholamine, has been investigated in terms of its effect upon atrioventricular conduction. Bundle of His recordings were obtained on six patients in basal conditions and with right atrial pacing at rates of 100, 120, and 140 per minute. Recordings were repeated following intravenous administration of Dobutamine in doses of 5, 10, and 15 mug per kilogram per minute. Dose-response curves were thus obtained for A-H and H-V intervals. Heart rate increased only moderately with progressive concentrations of the drug. Very significant facilitation of A-H conduction was demonstrated with doses of 10 and 15 mug per kilogram per minute, with no effect upon H-V times. Dobutamine may be a clinically useful inotropic agent in conditions associated with A-V conduction disturbances.

Rhabdomyoma (adult type) of the larynx.

A rhabdomyoma successfully removed from the right false cord of a 52-year-old woman, who had been disphonic for 3 years, is reported. Histologically the tumor showed the features of the adult type rhabdomyoma. The pathologic appearance and the biologic behavior of the rhabdomyoma have been well established in the recent literature.

Haemodynamic effects of a new inotropic agent (dobutamine) in chronic cardiac failure.

The haemodynamic effects of dobutamine were studied in 14 patients with chronic congestive cardiac failure. Heart rate, central venous, pulmonary arterial, pulmonary wedge, and aortic pressures, aortic dp/dt, cardiac output, cardiac index, stroke volume, and pulmonary and systemic vascular resistances were measured or derived. Dose-response curves were obtained by recording all measurements before and after intravenous infusion of dobutamine at rates of 2.5, 5, and 10 mug/kg per min for periods of 30 minutes each. Significant increases in mean values were observed for cardiac output from 3.7 to 6.4 l/min (82%), for stroke volume from 44 to 64 ml (39%), and aortic dp/dt from 692 to 1414 mmHg/s (92.0 to 188.1 kPa/s (76%). Heart rate increased only moderately from 86 to 101 per minute (31%). Significant reduction occurred in pulmonary wedge and central venous pressures. Mean aortic and pulmonary pressures did not change significantly, as a measure of decreased vascular resistances. The drug was uniformly well tolerated. The predominant inotropic effects of dobutamine without tachycardia or arrhythmias may be valuable in severe heart failure.

[Folliculoma].

The authors present a new case of a rare tumor, folliculoma, located in the face of a 57 year old woman. Concerning histogenesis, it appears most likely that Folliculoma represents a nevus developed from primary epithelial germ.
