[Isolation of 503 strains of virus in meningeal syndromes. Virologic and epidemiologic study].

An epidemiological and virological study on meningitis in Alsace during the 13-year period 1968-1981 is reported. 503 viruses isolated were associated with the diagnosis of meningitis. The Echovirus type 30 accounted for 48 p. 100 of the cases, the mumps virus of 12 p. 100. The remarkable high incidence of Echo 30 virus-associated cases is related to three outbreaks which occurred in Alsace during the summers of 1968, 1975 and 1980. Children below 12 years of age are the most sensitive population and particularly boys who made up 2/3 of the number of cases.

Induction of female sexual behavior by GTP in ovariectomized estrogen primed rats.

The effect of both intrahypothalamic and systemic administration of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) on lordosis behavior was studied in ovariectomized and ovariectomized-adrenalectomized, estrogen-primed rats (estradiol benzoate, 4 micrograms). This estrogen dose per se induced only weak or no lordosis behavior. Injection of GTP into the medial hypothalamic area (100 micrograms in 2.5 microliters) elicited lordosis behavior with relatively short latency in 6 out of 7 rats. Systemic administration of GTP in a dose range of 0.8 mg to 5.0 mg to ovariectomized estrogen-primed rats, stimulated intense lordosis behavior in all subjects. Weak lordosis responses were displayed within the first 12 hr after GTP injection, but as 48 hr all rats were highly estrous. Lordosis behavior remained for up to eight days, its duration being related to the dose of GTP administered. GTP (2 mg) induced lordosis behavior in ovariectomized, adrenalectomized estrogen-primed rats, thus excluding the participation of adrenal steroids in this effect. The results are interpreted in terms of the stimulation of adenyl cyclase-cAMP systems by GTP.

Patterns of motor and seminal vesicle activities during copulation in the male rat.

The interaction between behavioral and visceral events during copulation was studied in nine intact adult male Wistar rats. The motor copulatory pattern was analyzed by an accelerometric technique and the seminal vesicle pressure (SVP) was recorded through a catheter chronically inserted into the right seminal vesicle. Mounting was associated with a small broad rise in SVP that often preceded the initiation of pelvic thrusting. Penile insertion resulted in a second sharp rise in SVP superimposed on the primary wave related to mounting. A steep rise in SVP occurred during the performance of the motor ejaculatory pattern after a variable period of intravaginal thrusting. This final rise was associated with ejaculation. Analysis of the temporal relationships ships between the SVP changes and copulatory behavior revealed that each of the three rises of SVP was related to distinct patterns of stimulation, suggesting that they were mediated by separate reflex arcs.

Anesthetic pregnanes counteract androgen-induced defeminization.

The capacity of various pregnanes for counteracting androgen-induced defeminization was evaluated in an attempt to define some cellular mechanisms involved in the defeminization process. 5-day-old female rats received 60 microgram testosterone propionate (TP) along with one of various pregnanes: progesterone, 5 beta-pregnandione, 5 beta, 3 alpha-pregnanolone, 5 beta, 3 beta-pregnanolone, 5 alpha-pregnandione, 5 alpha, 3 beta-pregnanolone, 5 alpha, 3 alpha-pregnanolone or chlormadinone acetate. Protection against defeminization was defined as a significantly smaller proportion of anovulatory animals in a group compared to the control TP group. Data were analyzed at 60, 90 and 120 days of age. The anesthetic potency of the pregnanes was evaluated in 5-day-old male rats through the analysis of EEG and EMG records. Anesthetic pregnanes - progesterone, 5 beta-pregnandione and 5 beta, 3 alpha-pregnanolone - counteracted defeminization while nonanesthetic pregnanes - 5 alpha-pregnanes, chlormadinone acetate and 5 beta, 3 beta-pregnanolone - did not. The results show a clear relation between anesthetic capacity and protection against defeminization.

A polygraphic analysis of mounting and ejaculation in the New Zealand white rabbit.

The duration and intensity of some components of the male copulatory pattern was studied in ten male (seven experienced, three inexperienced) and two female New Zealand white rabbits by using high speed cinematography, accelerometry and by recording the pressure of the seminal vesicles. Duration of mounts varied greatly within and among subjects. Effective mounts, i.e., those terminating in ejaculation, lasted less (2.61 +/- 1.50 sec, mean +/- SD; n, 59) than ineffective mounts (3.08 +/- 2.16 sec, mean +/- SD; n, 199). Frequency of pelvic thrusting was significantly higher in effective (13.54 +/- 1.11 sec, mean +/- SD; n, 59) than in ineffective mounts (12.08 +/- 0.98 sec, mean +/- SD; n, 176). No pelvic thrusting occurred during intromission which usually lasted less than one second (722 +/- 266 msec SD; n, 43). Shortly after intromission (230 +/- 107 msec, mean +/- SD; n, 32) the pressure of the seminal vesicles raised. This rise in pressure outlasted copulation (1040 +/- 369 msec, mean +/- SD; n, 32). The mounting pattern of inexperienced rabbits was similar to that of experienced rabbits. The mounting pattern of females differed from that of males both in rate of pelvic thrusting and duration of pelvic thrusts.

In vitro inhibition of rat uterine contractility induced by 5 alpha and 5 beta progestins.

Ten natural progestins were evaluated for their capacity to inhibit the in vitro motility of rat's uterus. Progestins with their ring A reduced in the 5 beta position were significantly more potent than delta 4-3 keto and 5 alpha reduced progestins. These last progestins were ineffective to inhibit uterine motility excepting 3 alpha-hydroxy-5 alpha-pregnan-20-one which was slightly less effective than progesterone. The potency of the progestins to inhibit uterine motility was related to their capacity to induce membrane stabilization. The data indicates that 5 beta, but not 5 alpha reduction of progesterone, may be important for regulating myometrial activity.
