The implantation of natural tooth form bioglasses in baboons. A preliminary report.

This report describes a 6-month screening study comparing the tissue responses of several bioglass natural tooth implants in adult female baboons. The dental implants were designed to elicit osteogenesis at the interface of the implant and the oral tissues. This is in contrast to those types of implant materials that are merely biologically acceptable. Incisor teeth were extracted, dupplicated in bioglass, returned to the natural sockets, and splinted to the adjacent natural tooth, where they remained splinted for 3 months and then free standing for an additional 3 months. Microscopic evaluation revealed distinct histopathologic characteristics with certain bioglass formulas, such as ankylosis, a pseudofibrous capsule with fibers running parallel to the root surface, or an apparently true periodontal membrane with properly oriented Sharpey's fibers. True cementogenesis was not found.

Segmental renal hypoplasia and hypertension.

The association of hypertension with congenital renal hypoplasia (Ask-Upmark kidney) has been well established. A case is presented that clearly demonstrates the distinctive clinical, roentgenographic and pathologic features. An abnormal production of renin by the affected kidney suggested that the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone axis was involved in the genesis of the hypertension. Hypertension was cured by unilateral nephrectomy.

Anti-Cob causing acute hemolytic transfusion reaction.

An example of anti-Cob which caused an acute hemolytic transfusion reaction is reported. Immunohematologic studies showed this antibody to be an IgG immunoglobulin that weakly bound complement and reacted in the antiglobulin phase of the crossmatch. The unit of whole blood implicated in the hemolytic transfusion reaction was from a donor who was phenotyped as Co(a+b+). The patient gave no history of previous transfusions; however, anti-E and anti-c were also present.

Nursing research priorities of the National Black Nurses Association.

The purpose of this article is to describe the nursing research priorities of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA). The NBNA is a professional nursing association representing more than 150,000 black nurses throughout the United States and the Eastern Caribbean. This article describes knowledge gaps in nursing research and presents various findings from research studies aimed at defining research priorities in nursing. Recommended research priorities are discussed that are directed toward improving the health of African Americans and other vulnerable populations. The NBNA urges the National Institutes of Health to increase funding to support research initiatives with an emphasis on women's health, particularly the health of women from diverse cultures. Nursing research programs are steadily yielding results, which enable the nursing profession to meet the goal of using the programs include identification of research priorities, acknowledging the vast disparity in nursing research today.

The incest cycle across generations.

Using the theories of Murray Bowen and the teachings of Joseph Campbell, the author presents a clinical case to demonstrate how generations of sexual abuse led to anxiety symptoms in the offspring. Methods used to obtain and interpret the multigenerational family genogram, and the significance of family myths in sustaining dysfunctional patterns, are reviewed.

Sexually abused boys: awareness, assessment, and intervention.

The prevalence and consequences of the sexual victimization of young boys is tragically underestimated. The author provides data on the incidence of sexual abuse in boys and girls, ages 3-10, in an inpatient psychiatric children's unit. A retrospective chart review is presented including variables of coexisting maltreatment and symptomatology. Commonly found nursing diagnoses are identified with appropriate nursing interventions. Assessing a sexually abused boy, developing a comprehensive nursing care plan, and intervening effectively in assisting a child to assimilate and cope with his abuse experience are discussed in depth.

A prospective study of complications in Hickman right-atrial catheters in marrow transplant patients.

One hundred forty-three large bore right-atrial catheters (RACs) in 111 bone marrow transplant recipients were prospectively analyzed for the incidence of complications interfering with catheter function. Of the 143 RACs, 108 (76%) were patent on departure from Seattle or death. Infectious complications occurred in 63 (44%) of the catheters, resulting in 18 (13%) removals. Noninfectious complications occurred with 54 (38%) of the catheters, resulting in 17 (12%) removals. Successful interventions included catheter repair, dissolving precipitates with ammonium chloride solution, and declotting catheter lumens with heparin and/or urokinase. We conclude that RACs continue to be reliable and safe devices to use in marrow transplant patients. Complications interfering with catheter function are frequent; however, most can be resolved without the need to remove the catheter.
