Nurses' perceptions of reflective practice.

Reflective practice has become an accepted part of nursing development. The authors of this article asked clinicians and managers in their trust how they thought reflective practice may be enhanced. The study has enabled the trust to develop reflective practice in a number of ways which may benefit clinicians, managers and patients.

Introducing change in nursing: the case of research.

This paper examines the issue of encouraging change in nursing and focuses on how to move from task-orientated to science-based practice. Therefore, it considers the current theory on the process of change and using two clinical vignettes (one from psychiatric and one from general nursing practice) illustrates how science based practice was introduced. From these vignettes it draws four conclusion: (1) small-scale cultural change is possible even within large bureaucracies; (2) the nature and identity of change agents is not always immediately obvious; (3) there is arguably no one singular best way of bringing about change and; (4) change activists need to have an understanding of several models of change. It then makes managerial, educational and structural recommendations based on these conclusions.

Introducing change to the post-anaesthetic care unit.

Parental presence in the post-operative care unit (PACU) is an under-reported and under-researched area of paediatric care. This article explores the importance and value of parents being present with their child post-operatively. It reports on the audit findings following a practice development project which encouraged parents to be with their child in the PACU.

Caring for surgical patients with sickle cell disease.

This article aims to enlighten nurses working on surgical wards and in the operating theatre to give appropriate and quality nursing care to patients with sickle cell disease. The author considers patients who experience a vaso-occlusive crisis.

Quality assurance and the palliative care team.

Part of the nurse manager's role is to understand the complexities of running a specialist unit and to be aware of the increased focus on quality assurance programmes. This article describes how one model can be applied to involve all members of a palliative care team in the process of assessing and improving the quality of service provided.

The integration of research in the clinical setting: obstacles and solutions. A review of the literature.

One of the most influential factors in the successful genesis of any profession is the development and growth of research. Professions need to have their roots planted firmly in a fertile body of knowledge. Nursing is a developing profession; in order for it to progress, the utilisation of valid research findings is essential. In this paper, the author has reviewed some of the available literature on the subject of research utilisation, highlighting the obstacles and providing some possible solutions.
