Osmotic fragility and fluidity of erythrocyte membranes from rats raised on an essential fatty acid deficient diet.

Erythrocyte membranes from rats raised on a diet with low content of essential fatty acids were studied by osmotic sensitivity tests and spin labeling techniques. This diet induced significant modifications in acylglycerophosphocholine fatty acid composition with regard to 16 : 1, 18 : 1, 18 : 2 (n-6), 20 : 3 (n-9), and 20 : 4 (n-6). No changes in membrane fluidity as monitored by spin label motion were found but the diet caused an increased osmotic sensitivity in essential fatty acid deficient erythrocytes. 50% hemolysis was obtained at a 51.0% dilution of saline with H2O as compared to a 57.0% dilution for the control material. Membrane fluidity was unaffected by gamma-irradiation up to 80 krad.

Renal function and biopsy findings in patients on long-term lithium treatment.

Nine patients on long-term lithium treatment (3 to 13 years) had abnormal renal function with a decreased GFR and/or a decreased maximal urinary concentration capacity. Four patients had received lithium as the only drug, whereas five patients had had concomitant treatment with neuroleptics. No patient had a history of nephrourological diseases. Abnormal renal morphology was present in the biopsy samples from all patients. Cortical fibrosis was found in a variable degree. Dilated tubules and microcysts in which the epithelial lining was clearly abnormal were found in majority of samples. Electron micrographically, two types of abnormal epithelial cells were observed, one with small elongated mitochondria with dense matrix and the other with large spherical and less dense mitochondria. In distal tubules, mitochondrial swelling, accumulation of cytosegrosomes, and nuclear pyknosis dominated the picture. These findings indicate a tubulointerstitial nephropathy and support the hypothesis that long-term lithium treatment may cause renal damage in susceptible patients.

Serum fatty acid patterns in hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies.

The fatty acid pattern of serum lecithin was studied in 31 children with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN) of types specified in the classification of Dyck et al. (1975). In 30 children no relevant changes were revealed. The remaining patient had changes which were reversible and were considered to be independent of the polyneuropathy. It is concluded that primary defects of fatty acid metabolism do not characterize the well-defined types I, II and III of HMSN.

A comparative study of three approaches to the routine quantitative determination of spinal fluid total proteins.

The concentration of total protein in spinal fluid from 164 patients has been assayed by three methods based on different principles; a biuret, a dye-binding and a nephelometric procedure. Major proteins were quantified by immunochemical methods in order to get an estimate of the accuracy, and used for standard curves in the different methods in order to elucidate differences between total protein values. Based on the mean total protein values in relation to major protein values, total imprecision and practicability we conclude that the dye-binding technique is more accurate, precise and convenient than the other two methods for daily routine determination of total protein in spinal fluid.

Increase in myelin basic protein in CSF after brain surgery.

Myelin basic protein in spinal fluid was measured with a radioimmunoassay method after surgery of brain tumors and posttraumatic brains in thirteen cases. Three cases were studied daily for up to three weeks. Immediately after the operation the values were high but then successively returned to normal. Repeated measurement of the myelin basic protein in spinal fluid seem to be useful for assessing the healing rate of brain tissue after surgery for brain tumors and after other brain damage.

Demyelination of the mamillary bodies in alcoholism. A combined morphological and biochemical study.

Four different regions of the brain (the mamillary bodies, vermis of the cerebellum, the dorsal and medial part of thalamus, and the quadrigeminal plate) from nine male chronic alcoholics and nine controls were analyzed for morphological and biochemical abnormalities. The mamillary bodies, in contrast to the other three regions, showed loss of myelinated fibers and decreased concentrations of cerebrosides, cholesterol and phospholipids, indicating demyelination. It is concluded that this kind of lesion is common in chronic alcoholism.

Perception of parental sex guilt and sexual behavior and arousal of college students.

The present study examined the relationship between perceptions of parental sex guilt and the sexual arousability and sexual activity of 63 single male and 89 single female undergraduates. The results indicate that the same sex parent is perceived as more influential in determining the sex guilt of the child whereas the perceived sex guilt of the mother may have more influence on the sexual arousability of the son and the sexual activity of the daughter.
