The incidence of childhood diabetes in certain parts of Scotland.

The incidence of diabetes in children under 12 years of age has been studied in three regions of Scotland from 1976 to 1986. These areas represent more than half of the Scottish population of that age group. The overall annual incidence is 17.6 per 100,000, ranging from 16.8 in densely populated areas to 23.4 in more rural areas. Earlier studies have concerned the age group 0-18 years so the present results from a younger age group are, as expected, slightly lower but show the same trends. After a rise to 1983 there appears to have been a drop, but not in all areas. The danger of drawing conclusions from areas of low population or from short periods of time is stressed.

Temperature-sensitive beta-lactam-tolerant mutants of Escherichia coli.

Seven temperature-sensitive penicillin-tolerant mutants of Escherichia coli strain LD5 (thi lysA dapD) were isolated and characterized. Treatment with beta-lactams caused lysis of the mutants at 30 degrees C. Although growth of the mutants at 42 degrees C was inhibited by beta-lactams, no lysis occurred. The mutants were also slightly tolerant to D-cycloserine at 42 degrees C but lysed readily when deprived of diaminopimelate or when treated with moenomycin. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of various antibiotics were the same for the mutants and their parent. The mutations conferring penicillin tolerance were phenotypically suppressed in the presence of a variety of compounds which may act as chaotropic or antichaotropic agents. No defects in penicillin-binding proteins and peptidoglycan hydrolases were detected. Temperature-resistant revertants of the mutants were no longer tolerant to penicillin-induced autolysis at 42 degrees C. The mutations in five isolates were localized to the 56 to 61 min region of the E. coli linkage map and to the 44 to 51 min region in the case of two other isolates.

The prognosis for very low birth weight babies in the Highlands of Scotland.

One hundred and two admissions of VLBW babies to the Baby Unit at Raigmore Hospital were studied over a six-year period. The neonatal death rate was 53 per cent. Twenty three survivors weighing 1.36 kg. or less were examined at an average age of 3 years 11 months and 22 of these underwent cognitive assessment. All but one had normal or superior I.Q. assessments. Two were regarded as having significant or profound handicap. Possible reasons for the relatively low survival rate, but acceptable handicap rate are discussed.
