[The influence of pressing the meridian course on electroretinogram during acupuncture].

Observation was performed on 23 subjects with marked propagated sensation along meridians (PSM) and 30 without PSM. The electroretinogram (ERG) was recorded with surface electrode and added by an averager. The b wave of ERG evoked by flash stimulation was positive with a latent period about 60 ms and amplitude of 22 +/- 1.66 muv (n = 53). There were 2 types of ERG response during puncturing Hegu (LI 4). The amplitude of ERG b wave increased in 33 subjects and decreased in 20 subjects. However, the acupuncture effect was kept relatively stable in each subject. The spontaneous variation of ERG amplitude was about 10%. In contrast, it changed by 26.5 +/- 2.43% (n = 20) when Hegu (LI 4) was acupunctured alone. It is particularly to be noted that the amplitude of b wave almost remained unchanged, with in the range of 10.08 +/- 2.42% (n = 20), as the pressure was applied on Shousanli (LI 10) during acupuncture, no matter whether the subjects with or without PSM. However, the variation rate of b wave increased by 24.83 +/- 3.74% (n = 15) once again, if the pressure was applied on both side of Shousanli (LI 10), it was nearly equal to the value caused by acupuncture Hegu (LI 4) alone. The contrast between the two is striking. The result revealed again that there may be a certain substantial process advancing along the channel during acupuncture. It is the blockade of this process by mechanical pressure which leads to the decrease of the acupuncture effect.

[Observation on the relation between propagated sensation along meridians and the therapeutic effect of acupuncture on myopia of youngsters].

Nine hundred and ninety two eyes suffering from various degrees of myopia in 536 youngsters were treated with acupuncture. A method of exciting propagated sensation along meridians (PSM) and making it travel toward the affected region was employed in treatment. Bilateral Hegu (LI4) and Taichong (LR3); and bilateral Waiguan (ST5) and Guangming (GB37) were punctured on alternate days. The results showed that after 1-3 periods of treatment, the vision of 868 eyes (87.5%) were improved in various extent. Among them, the vision completely recovered in 131 eyes (13.31%), and the diopter decreased-0.75 to -1.00 D.S. in 13 eyes after acupuncture treatment. The therapeutic effect of acupuncture seemed to be considerably satisfactory and stable in two years following up. The extent of distinctness of PSM raised markedly with the increase of times of acupuncture. There was a close relation between the extent of distinctness of PSM and effectiveness of acupuncture. The more striking the centripetal PSM, the better was therapeutic effect of acupuncture. The excellent effect was always achieved when PSM arrived at the affected eye. Since PSM arrived at a large number of eyes in the subjects in younger year and so the better therapeutic effect was also achieved.

[Observation on the phenomenon of propagated sensation along meridians in youngsters].

That the opinion on the relation between the propagated sensation along meridians (PSM) and the age of the subjects was divergent in the results reported by some authors. In the last 10 years, we have performed a systematic investigation on PSM on a group of 536 youngsters. The main characteristics of PSM in youngsters were just the same as that of adults. However, the incidence of PSM in youngsters, particularly the degree of distinctness of PSM, was by far higher than that of adults. The results were stable and could be repeated in the experiments performed in different years. It showed that there was surely a close relation between the degree of distinctness of PSM and the age of subjects. This fact can not be appropriately explained at present. However, it provides an important clue to clarify the factors which influence the appearance of PSM, and in turn to promote the improvement of the therapeutic effect of acupuncture and cilacriation of the mechanism underlying the formation of PSM.

Sociological and economic theories of suicide: a comparison of the U.S.A. and Taiwan.

Time-series analyses were carried out to explore the importance of sociological and economic variables in accounting for the suicide rate in the U.S.A. and in Taiwan for 1952-1984. Sociological variables (divorce and female labor force participation) played similar roles in the multiple regressions for both nations while economic variables (GNP per capita/growth and unemployment) played a role only in the U.S.A.

Fertility and suicide rates: a time series analysis in the United States.

In a time series study of the USA from 1933 to 1984, fertility rates were associated with the suicide rates of those aged 15-44. The higher the fertility rate the lower the suicide rate for these age groups, for both whites and non-whites, and for both men and women. The results were seen as supporting Durkheim's theory of suicide.

Experimental Salmonella enteritidis phage type 4 infection and egg transmission in Japanese quails.

Japanese quails were inoculated orally with 1 x 10(10) colony-forming units of Salmonella enteritidis phage type 4 isolated from chicks to obtain information concerning S. enteritidis infection and egg transmission. The inoculation resulted in a bacteraemic infection with seeding of the liver, spleen, intestine, peritoneum, ovule, ovary and oviduct. Some infected birds showed diarrhoea, ruffled feathers, depression, loss of appetite and death. However, most infected birds remained clinically normal with normal egg production. Salmonella enteritidis was isolated from the albumen of 7, yolk of 15, shell of 13, and shell membrane of 15 of 164 eggs. The experiment suggests that S. enteritidis phage type 4 is invasive for Japanese quails and the infected eggs laid by S. enteritidis infected quails are probably the result of transovarian infection.

The impact of the economy on suicide and homicide rates in Japan and the United States.

A time series study of socioeconomic correlates of suicide and homicide in Japan and the USA from 1953 to 1982 revealed cross-national differences. Divorce rates were positively associated with rates of personal violence in the USA but negatively associated with these rates in Japan. Unemployment and female labor force participation also correlated differently with rates of personal violence in the two nations suggesting that different theories may be necessary to account for the variation in rates of personal violence in different societies.

Menninger's motives for suicide in the notes of completed and attempted suicides.

Brevard, Lester, and Yang in 1990, studying Menninger's motives for suicide, reported more evidence for the wish to be killed (i.e., self-blame or self-punishment) in suicide notes for completed suicides than in parasuicide notes for attempted suicide; however, they did not control for age and sex. A comparison of notes written by completed and attempted suicides that controlled for age and sex showed no differences in the presence of content which reflected Menninger's three motives for suicide, including the wish to be killed.

Suicide, homicide and unemployment: a methodological note.

In multiple regression analyses, the monthly time-series suicide and homicide rates for the USA from 1957-1986 were associated with unemployment and marriage rates. In contrast, annual time-series suicide and homicide rates were not as strongly associated with the social variables.

[Observation of ultrastructure and drug sensitivity of in vitro cultured exoerythrocytic form of Plasmodium berghei].

The ultrastructure of in vitro cultured exoerythrocytic stage (EE) of Plasmodium berghei (P. b.) was observed under transmission electron microscope (TEM). The drug sensitivity of EE was also measured in vitro. The EE was cultured in monolayer host cell, fixed and embedded in situ. The ultrathin sections were prepared and examined by routine methods. The TEM pictures showed that the fine structure of in vitro cultured EE was similar with that of EE grown in rat hepatocytes in vivo, as described by Meis et al. The parasite was found within a parasitophorous vacuole, with nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticula and Golgi apparatus were observed inside the parasite. After 24 h cultivation, the EE was incubated for 48 h in medium containing a serial concentrations of primaquine or chloroquine, then examined under light microscope. The percentage of abnormal parasites was calculated. The preliminary results showed that the sensitivity of cultured P. b. EE to primaquine and chloroquine was significantly different. At the same concentration of 1 x 10(-5) mol/L, the percentage of abnormal parasites was 38.5 +/- 3.9% and 5.7 +/- 1.9%, respectively. These results demonstrated that the in vitro cultivation system of P. b. EE would have potential utility in antimalarial drug research. (Figs. 1-6).

Regulation of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase gene expression in mice and men.

A nontemplate directed DNA polymerase, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (terminal transferase) is expressed in a tissue-specific and development stage-specific manner. Its enzymatic properties and tissue localization have implicated the protein in development of normal immune function. Significant progress has been made in understanding the enzymology and important domains of this protein. More recently, studies have focused on regulation of the gene that codes for the protein in mice and humans. The murine gene has yielded to these studies more readily than the human gene. A murine basal promoter element has been identified along with several trans-acting protein factors that may regulate gene expression. In the human gene there is no evidence for a basal promoter element. Rather, the promoter exhibits tissue specific properties. The present article reviews recent developments in this field.

Social and economic correlates of the elderly suicide rate.

A review of research found that the suicide rates of the elderly show similar regional social correlates as the suicide rates of younger groups and that these rates can be explained using similar sociological theories. Time-series studies in the USA indicate that the impact of economic prosperity on the suicide rate of the elderly is beneficial, whereas the impact on the suicide rate of younger adults is detrimental. The issues raised by this research are discussed.

Tissue concentrations of prostate-specific antigen in prostatic carcinoma and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA), as measured in peripheral blood, is currently the most widely used marker for the assessment of tumor burden in the longitudinal study of patients with carcinoma of the prostate (PCA). Studies from other laboratories have led to the conclusion that a given volume of PCA causes a much higher level of PSA in the peripheral circulation of patients than a similar volume of prostate without carcinoma. We have evaluated PSA in the resected tissues immunohistochemically and in extracts of PCA and of prostates resected because of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Immunohistochemical results were less quantitative than but consistent with the results of the ELISA of tissue extracts. Immunohistochemically, there was considerable heterogeneity in the expression of PSA by both PCA and BPH both within and among prostatic tissues from different patients. While the levels of expression of PSA in these tissues overlap broadly, PSA is expressed at a lower level in PCA than in BPH when PSA is expressed as a function of wet weight of tissue (p = 0.0095), wet weight of tissue/% epithelium (p less than 0.0001), protein extracted from the tissue (p = 0.0039), or protein extracted/% epithelium (p less than 0.0001).

Differences in the leucine aminopeptidase activity in extracts from human prostatic carcinoma and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Extracts of tissue showed that prostatic carcinomas contain less leucine aminopeptidase activity than benign prostatic hyperplasia. This is true when activity is expressed as specific activity (P = 0.0033), specific activity/% epithelium (P = 0.0007), activity/wet weight of tissue (P = 0.0028), or activity/wet weight of tissue/% epithelium (P = 0.0005). Almost all histochemically demonstrable activity is located in the epithelium. Enzymatic activities in extracts and in histochemical preparations showed similar differences between carcinoma and benign prostatic hyperplasia and were related (R = -0.38, P = 0.0400) to Gleason's grades. The transurethrally resected prostate cancers studied contained no well-differentiated tumors and a high proportion of poorly differentiated tumors. Histochemical activity is absent in most prostatic carcinomas and decreased in others. This observation is particularly interesting in view of the growing knowledge of tumor suppressor genes.
