The Ultra sonographic findings of 24 cases of small bowel tumors confirmed by surgery and pathology were described. According to their growth pattern, there were three types of small bowl tumors on ultra sonography: intraluminal mass, thick-walled, and extraluminal. After the patients drank 500 ml of water, the tumor was easily detected and pinpointed by ultrasonic observation of the filling and passage of the fluid in the diseased small bowl.

Ciclopirox olamine, a new synthetic substituted pyridone derivative, is an antimycotic agent with activity against a broad spectrum of pathogenic and nonpathogenic fungi. The clinical efficacy and safety of 8% ciclopirox olamine nail liquor were evaluated in 100 cases with finger (or great toe) onychomycosis. After 16 weeks and 24 weeks of treatment for finger and great toe onychomycosis, respectively, the overall therapeutic results were excellent in 36 cases, good in 17, fair in 24, and poor in 23. The period of treatment was extended in 31 cases; among them, 10 cases showed further improvement. As for in vitro inhibitory activity, the MIC of ciclopirox olamine against T. rubrum and C. albicans was 1 to 4 mg/L and 1 to 16 mg/L, respectively. This study indicates that 8% ciclopirox olamine nail liquor, with its satisfactory efficacy and lack of side effects, is a good remedy for onychomycosis.

The anti-tumor effect of Cetraria laevigata polysaccharides has been investigated in mice using sarcoma 180; Ehrlich ascitic tumor, cervical carcinoma u-14 and leukemia L7217. The results show that Cetraria laevigata polysaccharides may inhibit the growth of sarcoma 180, Ehrlich ascitic tumor and cervical carcinoma u-14 in mice at a dose of 200mg/kg ip (1/5 LD50). However, the survival time of leukemia L7217 wasn't prolonged. The reticuloendothelial system phagocytic function in mice was increased at ip doses of 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg (1/10 and 1/20 LD50).
Stress 99mTc-carbomethoxy isopropyl isonitrile myocardial perfusion tomography (Tc-CPI MPT) was performed in 24 controls with normal coronary arteriograms or stenosis less than 50% and 30 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) (stenosis greater than 50%). The sensitivity and specificity for the detection of CAD with Tc-CPI MPI was 90% and 96% respectively. The sens by Tc-CPI MPI was 89% for the patients with one-vessel involvement, 88% for two-vessel involvement, 100% for three-vessel involvement. The sens for the detection of LAD, LCX and RCA involvement was 86%, 86% and 80% respectively. The spec were 100%, 100% and 91% respectively. It is concluded that TC-CPI MPT is a valuable technique for diagnosing CAD.
Fluorescent determination of magnolol has been effected employing the sensitivity- and stability-enhancing action of the non-ionic surfaceactive emulsifier OP. As a result the accuracy of determination is raised by 2 orders of magnitude as compared to that of ultraviolet spectrophotometry.
Graft-versus-host reaction (GVHR) following allogeneic bone marrow (BM) transplantation was investigated by analyzing expression of antigen receptors on T cells specific for recipient antigens. GVHR chimeras were prepared by transplanting mixtures of splenic T cells and T-cell-depleted BM cells from B10 (I-E-, Mls-1b) or B10.AQR (I-E+, Mls-1b) mice into lethally irradiated AKR/J (I-E+, Mls-1a) recipients. Increased proportions of V beta 6+ T cells reactive to recipient antigens (I-E and Mls-1a) were observed in thymuses from such chimeras 1 or 5 wk after BM transplantation. V beta 6+ T cells observed 1 wk after BM transplantation were derived from mature T cells that had been inoculated into recipients. These cells responded to recipient antigens expressed in the thymus. After 5 wk, thymocytes brightly positive for V beta 6+ were shown not to descend from mature T cells but to differentiate from precursor cells present in the BM inocula. Since V beta 6+ T cells were eliminated in thymuses from non-GVHR chimeras 5 wk after BM transplantation using T-cell-depleted BM cells alone, it appears that GVHR occurring in the thymus at an early stage abrogates thymic stromal functions essential to induction of self-tolerance in the T-cell repertoire. These findings propose a mechanism (autoimmunity) to explain in part the pathogenesis of chronic GVHR.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) plays an important role in the oxygen-dependent microbicidal mechanism of polymorphonuclear neutrophils. The purpose of our study was to investigate the therapeutic potency of human MPO preparations. This paper is to present our work on MPO purification and its identification. White blood cells, isolated freshly from normal donors, were lysed with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide to liberate myeloperoxidase. The purified MPO was obtained by 65% (NH4)2SO4 precipitation followed by separation over the Sephadex G150 column. These pure MPO preparations were green in color and had an A430/A280 nm of 0.68. The enzymatic activity was of 29.77 u/mg. The pure normal MPO was composed of a 59,000 MW peptide, a 13,500 MW peptide, and a 38,000 MW peptide when subjected to SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions. The study of the therapeutic effect of the pure MPO on mice with C. albicans infection is under way.
Constituents of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae and its compound tablets, e.g. tanshinone A, cryptotanshinone, protocatechuic aldehyde and danshensu, were determined by TLC-densitometry. Optimum conditions were selected for constituent extraction, separation and determination. The method is accurate, sensitive and reproducible.
The effects of ephedrine (Eph) were compared with those of tyramine (Tyr) and phenylephrine (Phe) in ring segments of guinea pig portal vein in vitro. Eph (3-1000 mumol/L), Tyr (10-1000 mumol/L) and Phe (1-1000 mumol/L) all produced concentration-dependent contractile responses, which were exceedingly depressed by alpha-adrenoceptor blocker phentolamine (31 mumol/L). Pretreatment with reserpine 1 mg/(kg.d) x 2 d markedly diminished the effect of Tyr, but greatly potentiated the effects of Eph and Phe. Both Eph (1-30 mumol/L) and Tyr (10-100 mumol/L), but not Phe, significantly increased the electrical field stimulation (duration 2 ms, 3 Hz, 10 s, 50 V, 10 min intervals) evoked contractions of the portal veins. beta-Adrenoceptor blocker propranolol (0.5 mumol/L) greatly inhibited this effect of Eph, without affecting that of Tyr. It is suggested that the effect of Tyr is mainly due to its release of endogenous norepinephrine (NE) from the nerve terminals; conversely, Eph mainly bcts on postsynaptic alpha-adrenoceptors directly with some NE-releasing action which may involve the activation of presynaptic beta-adrenoceptors.
Five antimicrobial peptides were extracted from the cytoplasmic granules of rabbit neutrophils with 0.01 mol/L citric acid. SDS-PAGE gel densitometric analysis of the citric acid extract showed that they accounted for 34%-42% of the total extract proteins. When subjected to acid urea polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, five peptides migrated much further to the cathode than lysozyme. Beginning with the most cathodal component, they were in turn referred to as NP1, NP2, NP3, NP4, and NP5. They were purified from the citric acid extract by virtue of preparative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Each of them was of low molecular weight (2,500-6,000) as determined by SDS-PAGE. Three of the peptides were tested in vitro for fungicidal activity. When Candida albicans (10(7)/ml) were incubated with 12.5 micrograms/ml of NP1 or NP2 at 37 degrees C for 2 h, the death rates of the organisms were 96.6% and 93.3% respectively. NP3 was shown to be active against Candida albicans although less potent than NP1 and NP2.
