Analgesia following extradural and i.m. pethidine in post-caesarean section patients.

The onset, quality and duration of analgesia following extradural pethidine 50 mg and i.m. pethidine 100 mg was assessed in 30 postoperative patients who had undergone Caesarean section under extradural anaesthesia. Saline and pethidine were given in a randomized, double-blind fashion using simultaneous extradural and i.m. injections. Extradural pethidine provided superior analgesia, of quicker onset but similar duration, and both treatments were associated with a low incidence of side effects.

Pain relief in labour using epidural pethidine with adrenaline.

The degree of pain was assessed by use of a visual analogue scale in 20 patients in established labour before and after the epidural injection of pethidine 50 mg with adrenaline 1:200,000. Forty-two doses were administered and of these 83% gave good pain relief and only 5% had no effect at all. The duration of action was longest following the first dose decreasing with subsequent doses. No evidence of sympathetic or motor blockade was found and side-effects were minimal. In the postpartum period 17 of the mothers expressed full satisfaction with the technique.

Epidural pethidine in labour. A study of dose requirements.

The degree of pain relief and duration of action were assessed after various doses of epidural pethidine had been given to 12 primigravid mothers in labour. Evidence of sympathetic and motor blockade was sought. Twenty-eight doses were administered and of these 50% gave good pain relief and a further 43% of doses produced some relief. The duration of action was related to dose and varied between 55 min after 25 mg pethidine and 150 min after 100 mg. The blood pressure remained constant and there was no motor blockade. In the postpartum period five mothers expressed full satisfaction and seven were helped by the injection.
