A freeze-fracture study on GM2 gangliosidosis.

Membranous cytoplasmic bodies (MCBs) in neurons from an autopsy case with Tay-Sachs disease were investigated using the freeze-fracture technique. Despite formalin fixation for months, the structures of storage material were well preserved and showed complex and compound MCBs with typical arrangement of lamellae. Each lamella consisted of a clear space of about 27 nm delimited on both sides by a small fracture line similar to plasma membranes as seen in electron micrographs of freeze-fracture studies. Our investigation shows that freeze-fracturing of autopsy material is a valuable method and can be performed on neuronal storage material.

[Morphology of dementia of the Alzheimer type].

Senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT) is one of the most common diseases of the nervous system in the over-65 population of the United States and in northern Europe. Clinical features of SDAT are dysfunction of memory, changes in the personality and others. The following report deals with morphological changes in SDAT. First, histological alterations of SDAT like neurofibrillary tangles and neuritic plaques are described together with some experimental work on neurofibrillary changes induced by spindel inhibitors and aluminum. Second, the role of the cholinergic system deficiency in SDAT is discussed concerning the selective loss of cholinergic neurons and the cholinergic innervation of neuritic plaques.

Sarcoidosis of the spinal cord and medulla oblongata. A pathological and neuroradiological case report.

A case of 68-year-old woman with symptoms of slowly progressive diffuse myelopathy, is presented, which could only temporally be reversed by immunosuppression. Contrast enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) scan demonstrated multifocal patchy enhancing lesions from cervical to mild thoracic segment and a circumscribed lesion of the whole medulla oblongata. Postmorten examination disclosed a histological confirmed, multifocal sarcoidosis of the spinal cord and medulla oblongata, with few sarcoid granulomas in one hilar lymph node and skeletal muscle of the upper extremities. Only nine similar cases of intramedullary sarcoidosis confirmed by autopsy with symptoms solely attributable to the spinal cord have been reported. A review of the pathological manifestations, diagnostic and treatment of intramedullary sarcoidosis is given.

Combined malformation of the Vein of Galen and of spinal vessels: endovascular embolization.

This case report describes a combination of arterio-venous malformation of the Vein of Galen (VGAM) and intraspinal venous malformation in a newborn. Successful local embolization by Tantal coils was followed by spinal paraplegia. The child died at the 26th postnatal day. The neuropathological aspects of this course will be discussed including a review of the literature.
