On the basis of a representative paper and pencil survey with office based psychiatrists, neurologists, psychiatric out-patient clinics and psychiatric wards/hospitals it is shown that in Germany in 1997 about 136,000 adult patients with diagnosed schizophrenia (F20 according to ICD 10) are attended by specialists. 75.4% of these patients are in attention of office based specialists, and 21.3% are attended by out-patient clinics. According to the details of psychiatric wards and hospitals, 3.3% of the patients are under long term (> 1 year) medical attention at hospitals. The amount of schizophrenia patients being under attention of specialists corresponds to 0.21% of the German population > 18 years. For patients who receive out-patient treatment it is shown that they are under medical attention at hospitals for average 22 days per year, and for 3.4 days they are under medical attention at rehabilitation centers.

[Production-specific changes in emotional impression of speech: dimensions and acoustic correlates of impression formation].

The variations in the emotional impression arising within the time course of 60 utterances were examined. According to the similarities of these impressions, the utterances could be arranged within a two-dimensional space with changing structure. The first dimension referred to the contrasting poles of aggression and attraction (e.g., anger vs. tenderness). The second dimension referred to the contrasting poles of euphorical opening and defensive closing (e.g. joy vs. sadness, anxiety). The emotional dimensions of activity, valence and potency could be integrated. However, the orthogonality of the activity and valence dimension only developed in the course of time, and with increasing utterance length the discrimination of emotions on the valence dimension also increased. The quality of the emotional impression is nearly perfectly predictable from acoustical parameters. However, most of these parameters affect the perceived emotional impression only locally, in individual parts of the utterances. The correlations between the acoustical parameters and the quality of the emotional impression fluctuate widely when the utterance length increases.

Carotenemia in mentally retarded children. I. Incidence and etiology.

The incidence and etiology of carotenemia in mentally retarded children were examined. Fasting serum carotenoid and vitamin A levels were measured in 77 profoundly mentally retarded children aged 3 to 19 years who were receiving a standard diet containing 2000 IU of carotene (expressed in terms of vitamin A activity) and supplemented by 2000 IU of vitamin A daily. Seventeen of the 77 patients had serum carotenoid levels of more than 300 mug./ml. The particulate size of food had a significant inverse relationship to serum carotenoid levels and was an important factor in determining carotenemia. The serum vitamin A level was also higher in children on homogenized diet than in those on pureed feeds, while the lowest level was noted among patients on a chopped diet. Besides particulate size of food, other factors may also be operative in determining carotenemia.
