Crossmodal changes in the somatosensory vibrissa/barrel system of visually deprived animals.

Cats deprived of vision from birth adapt remarkably well to their situation and show little behavioral impairment. They seem to compensate for their lack of vision by relying more on their auditory and tactile senses. We report here that the facial vibrissae, which are most important for tactile orientation in many animals, show supernormal growth in both cats and mice that have been deprived of vision from birth. Furthermore, the whisker representation in the somatosensory cortical barrel field shows a concomitant enlargement in binocularly enucleated mice: individual barrels are expanded in size by up to one-third. The increased use of the vibrissae in visually deprived animals may stimulate both their own growth and, via activation of the respective neural pathways, the expansion of their central representation.

[Effect of carboxyethylgermanium sesquioxide on cultured normal neonatal rat myocardial cells and cells injured by isoproterenol].

The effect of carboxyethylgermanium sesquioxide (Ge-132) on cultured neonatal rat myocytes and isoproterenol injured myocytes was studied. The results showed that Ge-132 (0.01 mmol.L-1 and 1 mmol.L-1) increased the incorporation of both [3H]-TdR and [14C]-UR, reduced the membrane lipid fluidity and inhibited the release of the cytoplasmic enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Exposure of the myocytes to isoproterenol 0.5 mmol.L-1 for 6 hours resulted in 5-fold release of LDH compared with the control. All myocytes ceased beating. Ultrastructurally, severe sarcolemmal and mitochondrial damage was evident. When the cells were pretreated with Ge-132 before the addition of isoproterenol, the increased LDH release was inhibited significantly, and preservation of beat and ultrastructure of myocytes was observed. In addition, the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was elevated by Ge-132. All the effects of Ge-132 were dose-related. The results indicate that Ge-132 may improve the metabolism of cultured neonatal rat myocytes and protect myocytes from isoproterenol-induced injury.

Anesthesia for primary hyperparathyroidism.

We review the anesthesia used on patients with primary hyperparathyroidism from 1980-1989. As the first choice, nearly two thirds of the operations were performed under cervical epidural block, and about 90% of these obtained satisfactory results. Injury of the spinal cord and nerve root could be avoided by accurate insertion of the epidural needle. Respiratory depression might also be minimized with an alert perioperative course of 5 ml 0.8-1.33% lidocaine as the initial dose followed by 6-8 ml for maintenance. For complicated cases, such as those who had undergone previous cervical operations or were suspected of having ectopic parathyroidomas, general anesthesia was carried out instead.

Serological survey of a captive macaque colony in China for antibodies to simian type D retroviruses.

Sera from 510 macaques consisting of Macaca mulatta, Macaca assamensis, Macaca fascicularis, Macaca nemestrina, and Macaca arctoides were investigated for antibodies to simian AIDS type D retrovirus (SRV) by ELISA and Western blot with viral antigens purified from supernatants of SRV-1 infected cell cultures. Of these monkeys, 104 were seropositive by ELISA; only 23 were confirmed by Western blot. The true positive reaction to SRV was found in 15 of 463 (3.2%) M. mulatta and eight of eleven (72.7%) M. assamensis.
