Palindromic rheumatism. II. Failure to detect circulating immune complexes during acute episodes.

Thirty-eight samples of blood and 2 of synovial fluid were obtained from 19 patients suffering from palindromic rheumatism. In 12 cases samples were obtained from the same patient both during and between acute attacks. The presence of immune complexes was sought by a C1q-binding test. Most patients gave negative results: moderately elevated levels were obtained in a few. Broadly the pattern of results showed that individual patients were either positive or negative irrespective of whether they were in an attack or in remission. C3 and C4 measurements showed no significant abnormalities, confirming previous studies. Patients with elevated C1q-binding tests tended to be seropositive. We speculate that these are patients more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

Circulating immune complexes in patients with cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis.

Increased Clq binding levels have been obtained in serum from twenty-one (50%) of forty-two patients with cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis (CFA) suggesting the presence of circulating immune complexes. There was a low frequency of positive results using a number of other tests for circulating immune complexes. The increased Clq binding levels were observed in six (35%) out of seventeen patients with lone lung involvement and in fifteen (60%) out of twenty-five patients with extrapulmonary connective tissue disorders. There was an especially close correlation between arthritis and elevated Clq binding. A strong correlation between Clq binding levels and levels of circulating rheumatoid factor (RF) and IgG, and enhancement in macrophage radiobioassay tests using RF-containing sera, suggested that RF might be involved in the circulating immune complexes in these patients. DNAase pre-treatment of sera did not influence the findings, and there was no correlation between Clq binding and levels of immunofluorescent ANA, C-reactive protein levels, or platelet counts. A weak correlation between Clq binding and erythrocyte sedimentation rates, and slightly lower binding levels in treated than untreated patients with 'lone' CFA suggested that binding levels may give some indication of disease activity and may in some instances be influenced by treatment.

Guidelines for family interviewing and brief therapy by the family physician.

Psychosomatic and behavioral problems are commonly seen in the practice of family medicine. If these problems are viewed as difficulties with family interaction, rather than as difficulties of an individual family member, intervention may be more successful. Treatment of families with problems involves interviewing the family unit, identifying and altering dysfunctional behavioral patterns within the family which serve to maintain the problem, and making selected referrals to experienced family therapists.

The Aberdeen Obstetric Data Bank.

An obstetric-neonatal-gynecological data bank has been developed for the Aberdeen District in Scotland and is now fully computerized. Within it, a twin register including over 550 pairs of known placentation and zygosity has developed.

Myocardial lesions in rats fed rapeseed oil. II. Effects of castration.

The effects of castration on the incidence of myocardial lesions in rats were investigated in an experiment which included two factors: sex (entire males, castrated males, entire females and castrated (ovariohysterectomized) females) and diets (5% corn oil, 20% corn oil, and 20% Brassica napus var. Zephyr rapeseed oil). For 16 weeks, each of the 12 groups of 30 Sprague-Dawley rats, housed 2 per cage, were fed ad libitum the test oils incorporated in a semisynthetic diet. At each weighing, the mean body weights for each diet were highest in entire males followed by castrated males, castrated females, and entire females with all differences significant (P less than 0.05). The results indicated that castration did not influence cardiac fatty acid composition. The incidence of myocardial lesions in entire and castrated females and in castrated males was similar while significantly more entire males developed lesions (P less than 0.001). Rats fed a diet containing 20% Zephyr rapeseed oil showed a significantly (P less than 0.001) higher incidence of heart lesions than did rats fed diets containing 5% or 20% corn oil. Similarly, significantly (P less than 0.05) more rats fed the 20% corn oil diet had lesions than rats fed the 5% corn oil diet. The involvement of androgens in the formation of myocardial lesions is suggested, since castration significantly lowered the incidence in males but not in females.

Factors causing and reversing vasoconstriction in unventilated lung.

Vasoconstriction occuring a unventilated or hypoxic lung was studied in dogs and cats to elucidate mechanisms which both cause and reverse it. Lungs were perfused in vivo at constant pressure or constant blood flow; alternatively blood flow and pressure were measured with minimal operative interference. Stimulus-response curves of lung vessels to hypoxia showed a large response within the physiological range of P02 values. Vasoconstriction in unventilated lung caused by bronchial occlusion sometimes matched that caused by an equal degree of ventilation hypoxia but was sometimes greater. Responses to both stimuli varied widely between animals and in one animal at different times. This could be due to variable availability of a transmitter or variable presence of vasodilator substances. Both histamine and beta-adrenoreceptor stimulants caused pulmonary vasodilatation in unventilated lung. Histamine caused pulmonary vasoconstriction and vasodilatation in different circumstances which could be blocked respectively by H1 and H2 antihistamine drugs. Potent alpha- and beta-adrenoreceptor action on pulmonary vessels was demonstrated in both species. Alpha-adrenoreceptor blocking drugs caused dilatation and beta-adrenoreceptor blocking drugs caused vasoconstriction. The possible role of histamine and catecholamines in causing or reversing hypoxic vasoconstriction or in maintaining pulmonary vascular tone is discussed.

An empirical method of grouping genotypes based on a linear function of the genotype-environment interaction.

The regression approach for analysing genotype-environmental interaction is extended to include the grouping of genotypes. An unweighted pair-group cluster analysis was applied to a special dissimilarly index, derived from the test statistic for differences among regressions. The resulting groups reflect the general pattern of response to the various environments. The data of Yates and Cochran (1938) were used to illustrate the clustering process.

Collaborative study of a spectrophotometric method for determining maleic hydrazide residues in tobacco and vegetables.

A distillation-spectrophotometric method for the determination of maleic hydrazide residues in tobacco and vegetables reported previously was studied collaboratively. Ten laboratories submitted analytical results on 10 samples containing residues resulting either from field treatment or laboratory fortification. The samples were estimated to contain from 0.99 to 16.36 mug maleic hydrazide/0.5 g sample analyzed. The coefficients of variation based on precision standard deviation ranged from 57.7% for the lowest residue content to 32.4% for the highest. The corresponding coefficients of variation based on overall standard deviations were estimated to be at least one-fifth larger. Strong evidence of systematic laboratory differences was found (F-test, significant at 0.1%). Apparent recoveries of 10.0 mug maleic hydrazide added to 0.5 g fluecured tobacco and potato were 97.3 and 89.7%, respectively. Apparent recoveries of 16.0 and 16.5 mug added to 0.5 g green bean were 87.4 and 85.5%, respectively. The precision of the method studied was no better than that of the current official final action method, 29.121--29.127, and its adoption is not recommended.
