Nurse practitioners enter the new millennium: a global initiative.

Health care for all was the theme as nurse practitioners gathered in the United States for the 8th International Conference. At the conference, nurse practitioners representing 27 countries discussed issues of global concern. Nurse practitioners face common challenges in their global community. Strategies for practice and forward movement of the advanced role are discussed. Universal challenges include titling, legal recognition, legal status, prescriptive authority, and reimbursement. These issues continue to be addressed as we move toward a global community.

International collaboration: initial steps and strategies.

The nurse practitioner (NP) movement, which began in the United States in 1965, has caused sweeping changes both in nursing and in health care delivery. The concept of NPs then spread to the United Kingdom (U.K.) and continues to move globally. The international development of NPs has been streamlined through collaborative efforts of the U.S. and the U.K. There have been striking similarities in the evolution of expanded practice roles in both countries. In 1993, NPs from the U.S. and the U.K. came together to support the first international NP conference and, in the process, developed a framework for global international collaboration. This article summarizes the collective knowledge and the strategies for success developed through this collaborative effort.

A glimpse of nurse practitioners in Wales.

Nurse practitioners (NPs) from six nations came together for the 7th International Nurse Practitioner Conference in Cardiff, Wales, in August 1999. The most pressing issues discussed and debated in the international arena continue to be focused on education, certification, and future directions for NPs.

Reshaping the nurse practitioner image through socialization.

The image of the NP is bound to the traditional image of nursing, often impeding progress toward autonomous nursing practice. Through socialization NPs can be empowered to reshape their image, enabling them to educate the public to identify NPs as autonomous providers of health care. This is necessary to enhance the NP's ability to function in the future health care arena.

Reaching collaboration through empowerment: a developmental process.

Nurses are well positioned to play an influential role in health care reform. As the concept of collaboration takes on new meanings, nurses must be prepared to function in interdisciplinary groups. They need to move from a unidisciplinary model of problem solving through a nursing approach to a multidisciplinary model, where different professions work as equal members of a team. The ultimate goal is to reach an interdisciplinary model in which team members from a variety of disciplines modify their perspective in light of other perspectives. Empowerment is viewed as an individual developmental process that occurs in stages during a period of time. Nurses will be better able to collaborate in an egalitarian manner once they have personally become empowered. It is up to nursing to seize the opportunity to become an equal partner in today's health care.

Issues in summer safety: a call for sun protection.

Summer is associated with vacation and time spent in the outdoors. It is also a time when parents and children need to be reminded of the dangers and long-term health effects of being exposed to hazards of the sun. It has been estimated that the regular use of sunscreen during childhood would reduce the lifetime incidence of certain types of skin cancer by 78%. Selecting a sunscreen may be a difficult task. Pediatric nurses and other health care professionals are in a pivotal position to educate both parents and children on the benefits of sun protection and offer information about strategies for enjoying a safe summer.
