Reduction of alcohol selection by pargyline in mice.

Drugs which increase brain levels of serotonin (5-HT) have frequently been found to cause a decrease in voluntary ethanol consumption. Results obtained with parachlorophenylalanine (pCPA), which decreases 5-HT, have been less consistent. The present investigation compared the effects of pCPA on alcohol selection with those of pargyline, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor which increases brain levels of 5-HT. Ingestion of a 10% ethanol solution was assessed in male C57BL/6J mice given daily injections of 250 or 300 mg/kg pCPA, 50 mg/kg pargyline, or saline. An additional control group received no treatment. A two-bottle preference procedure was employed, and ethanol and water intake were recorded during a pretreatment period (11 days), a treatment period (8 days), and a posttreatment period (10 days). Like other agents which increase 5-HT, parygyline produced a depression in ethanol intake which lasted beyond the time of drug administration. pCPa had no effect on ethanol ingestion either during the period of drug administration or afterwards.

Sensitivity to low doses of ethanol and pentobarbital in mice selected for sensitivity to hypnotic doses of ethanol.

These experiments assessed sensitivity to low doses of ethanol and pentobarbital in mice that had been selectively bred with respect to ethanol sleep time (the length of time an animal remains on its back following a hypnotic dose of ethanol). The hypothesis under investigation was that short-sleep (SS) mice might be more sensitive than long-sleep (LS) mice to excitatory effects produced by low doses of depressants. In support of this hypothesis SS mice were more active in an open-field test after ethanol than were LS mice. The lines did not differ in performance on a rotating-rod apparatus after these same doses of ethanol, suggesting that the difference in open-field activity was not attributable to a greater impairment of locomotor activity in LS mice. A similar difference in the open-field activity of the selected lines was observed with pentobarbital.

Palatal patch-grafts in post areas of subperiosteal implants.

Transplantation of palatal patch-grafts before insertion of subperiosteal implants can be helpful in producing a better stress-bearing area for a prosthesis. Careful use of the technique assures adequate attached mucosa around the implant posts and reduces the possibility of infection and wound dehiscence.

Split-thickness skin grafts transplanted over exposed maxillary bone in dogs.

Studies in five dogs showed that skin grafts over decorticated bone became viable after two weeks; skin grafts over nondecorticated bone were necrotic and sloughed. After eight weeks, the grafts on the decoritcated areas were well vascularized; peripheral epithelial migration had almost completely closed the defects in the nondecorticated sites.

Inferior-border rib grafting for augmentation of the atrophic edentulous mandible.

Use of inferior-border grafting eliminates many of the problems associated with transoral onlay graft procedures. With an inferior-border graft, the graft does not bear the direct pressure of a prosthesis and allows for increase in mandibular height without as much loss of vestibule as in a transoral graft. A skin-graft vestibuloplasty is performed 6 to 12 months after rib grafting but the patient can wear a denture in the interim.

Surgical treatment for recurrent dislocation or chronic subluxation of the temporomandibular joint.

Recurrent dislocation or chronic subluxation of the temporomandibular joints may occur from long-term overclosure. Mandibular overclosure is due to loss of dentition. If the overclosure is not corrected by prosthetic rehabilitation of the proper vertical dimension, the result will be loosening of the temporomandibular capsule and stretching of the lateral ligament. The authors advocate capsule plication and ligamentorrhaphy via a preauricular or endaural approach. Occlusal splints are used during surgery to reestablish the vertical dimension. The patient is kept in intermaxillary fixation for 3 weeks. Postoperative prosthetic reconstruction is needed. Two cases are presented.

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis secondary to Marie-Strümpell disease.

Marie-Strümpell disease, or ankylosing spondylitis, is a severe arthritic disorder that may involve the TMJs. Bony alkylosis may result and cause lack of jaw mobility. Familiarity with this disease entity and other arthritic disorders is a necessity for the dentist and oral surgeons.

Focal seizures, early veins, and increased flow. A clinical, angiographic, and radioisotopic correlation.

Prominent early draining veins have been found in angiograms of four patients studied during an acute benign illness characterized by repetitive focal motor seizures and prominent postictal neurologic deficits. Concomitant intravenous radionuclide gamma camera flow and static images showed increased relative perfusion with a slight positive static uptake on the involved side. Follow-up studies showed no evidence of these abnormalities. These angiographic and radioisotopic findings probably correlate with the clinically observed cortical hyperemia as part of, or subsequent to, focal motor seizures. Alternatively, these findings suggest the possibility that vascular occlusions may be the underlying cause of the patients' illness.
