The effect of oral administration of megadoses of ascorbate was studied on some haemopoietic factors in young apparently normal guinea pigs. Supplementation of 150 mg of the vitamin for 7 days resulted in significantly increased haematocrit value and haemoglobin concentration. Total and unsaturated iron binding capacity were also increased in association with elevated plasma iron concentration. The difference of these results from the control animals, however, was not statistically significant. The improved haematological status in guinea pigs by ascorbate treatment could be attributed to haemoconcentration rather than to an effect of iron metabolism.
An indirect immunoperoxidase staining method has been successfully applied to 4% formaldehyde solution tissue sections fixed in and embedded in paraffin for the localization of Sporothrix schenckil and Cryptococcus neoformans without prior trypsinization of tissue sections. A comparison of this method with an analogous immunofluorescence staining technique has been made.

A 56-year-old man had a verrucous plaque with draining abscesses on the dorsum of hir foot for four years. Examination of cultures revealed a Gram-negative bacterium that, to our knowledge, has not been described in the literature. The infection was cured by treatment with co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole) and topical 10% lactic acid in hydrophylic emulsion base.
