[Detection of hepatitis B surface antigen using passive hemagglutination].

The passive hemagglutination test (Sero-Test CCB) for the detection of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) has been developed. The comparative study of the sensitivity of Sero-Test CCB, the passive hemagglutination test Hepanostikon (developed by Organon, the Netherlands) and the radioimmunoassay (with the use of an experimental assay kit provided by the Institute of Vaccines in Dessau, GDR) has been carried out by the determination of HBsAg in 100 coded sera from viral hepatitis patients and hepatitis virus carriers. Both passive hemagglutination tests (Sero-Test CCB and Hepanostikon) have yielded coinciding results (r = 0.90). The sensitivity of Sero-Test CCB has been found to exceed that achieved with the use of electrophoretic techniques 30-150 times, though it is 8 times lower than the sensitivity of the radioimmunoassay. The test kits Sero-Test CCB HBsAg are used for the examination of donor blood and for the survey of groups of persons subjected to a high risk of contacting hepatitis B infection in hemodialysis and transplantation centers, surgical wards, etc.

Characterization of calmodulin-dependent and cyclic-AMP-dependent protein kinase stimulation of cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium transport.

The mechanism by which calmodulin stimulates Ca2+ transport in cardiac microsomal preparations enriched in sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) was investigated. Under incubation conditions in which the majority of the phosphoprotein formed was Ca2+-dependent and no phospholamban phosphorylation was observed (10 degrees C, 15-sec incubations in the presence of 2 microM ATP), calmodulin was found to have no effect on the steady-state level of the acylphosphate phosphorylation site of Ca2+-ATPase. A significant stimulation of Mg2+, Ca2+-ATPase activity by calmodulin and a 3-fold increase in the turnover of the Ca2+ pump were, however, observed. As the ATP concentration in the incubation media was elevated (20 and 200 microM ATP), a significant degree of phosphoprotein formed was observed to be cyclic AMP (cAMP)-dependent. The degree of Ca2+-dependent phosphorylation remained constant. Under these conditions, calmodulin had no effect on the degree of phosphoprotein formed. However, when the experiments were conducted at 30 degrees C for 5 min in the presence of 500 microM ATP, a significant amount of the phosphoprotein formed was calcium-calmodulin-dependent and was additive to phosphoprotein formation observed in the presence of cAMP-dependent protein kinase. The ratio of calcium-calmodulin-dependent to cAMP-dependent phosphorylation was 1:1. K+ (110 mM) decreased the levels of phosphorylation observed in the presence of calcium and calmodulin, but had less of an effect on the levels observed in the presence of cAMP-dependent protein kinase. Autoradiographic analysis of SR membranes labeled with [32P]-ATP revealed two protein bands (24,500 and 40,000 daltons) phosphorylated in the presence of added calcium and calmodulin that were not observed in the absence of either of these additions to the reaction media. These results suggest that calmodulin stimulates Ca2+ transport by a direct effect on the Mg2+, Ca2+-ATPase. An indirect effect on Ca2+ transport via a calcium-calmodulin-dependent protein kinase, though, cannot be ruled out.

[The surgical form of the hemolytic-uremic syndrome].

The hemolytic-uremic syndrome consist of micro-angiopathic hemolytic anemia, acute renal failure, and thrombocytopenia following a prodromal illness of gastroenteritis. The syndrome can present in dramatic fashion with severe abdominal pain and signs of peritonitis suggesting an acute surgical crisis. In some cases, laparotomy is necessary, and we report a case with colectomy.

[Results of treatment in the hyperprolactinemic anovulatory syndrome].

This is a report about the results of Parlodel and neurosurgical treatment of 30 patients with infertility and amenorrhea, in 18 cases combined with galactorrhea. There were 4 cases of non-ovulatory cycles with or without oligomenorrhea. 2 young girls had a primary amenorrhea. All patients wanted to have children. A pituitary tumor was diagnosed in 15 patients, it was microsurgically removed in 7 cases. 18 of 30 patients became pregnant after a drug treatment or combined neurosurgical and drug therapy.

Purchase of service contracts and the functioning of private agencies.

During the past 15 years, social services have experienced a number of significant changes in clientele, provisions, delivery, and financing of services. The escalation of these changes became most dramatic with the passage of Title XX as an amendment to the Social Security Act, effective October 1, 1975. Title XX represents the groundwork of the emerging social service structure in the United States. The authors discuss the multiple issues in the expansion of Title XX and present findings from an exploratory study as to the implications.
