A new hydrophilic copolymer membrane for dermabrasion.

Omiderm, a hydrophilic copolymer membrane, is a new dressing for the postoperative care of the dermabrasion patient. The unique physical properties of this dressing will be examined. Based on the clinical experiences presented, suggestions will be outlined that facilitate the best results from its use following dermabrasion.

Prolonged continuous versus intermittent oral acyclovir treatment in normal adults with frequently recurring genital herpes simplex virus infection.

In Year 1 of this two-year trial, patients with six or more genital herpes recurrences in the past year received suppressive treatment with either acyclovir, 400 mg, or placebo, orally twice daily for one year, and physician-documented recurrences were treated with open-labeled acyclovir, 200 mg, orally five times per day for five days (acute treatment). In Year 2, patients received open-labeled acyclovir treatment either with daily suppressive therapy or intermittent acute therapy. Among 683 patients who completed two years of treatment, 348 received continuous suppressive treatment for two years, 276 received acute treatment in Year 1 and suppressive treatment in Year 2, 24 received suppressive treatment in Year 1 and acute treatment in Year 2, and 35 received acute treatment for two years. Patient groups receiving intermittent acute acyclovir treatment experienced means of 7.0 to 12.6 recurrences/year during treatment as compared with 1.4 to 1.9 recurrences/year among groups receiving continuous suppressive treatment. No patients who received acute treatment remained recurrence-free for two years as compared with 29 percent of patients receiving continuous acyclovir suppression for two years. There was no evidence of cumulative toxicity detected by clinical, hematologic, or blood chemistry evaluations performed monthly in Year 1 and quarterly in Year 2. Suppressive oral acyclovir therapy remained effective and well-tolerated in this two-year trial.

Distinctive acral erythema occurring during therapy for severe myelogenous leukemia.

A distinctive acral erythema developed in four patients with myelogenous leukemia, subsequent to blood transfusions and intensive chemotherapy with cytarabine. The clinical and histopathologic features of the eruption were suggestive of a drug-induced toxic eruption. To our knowledge, only one previous similar case has been reported in the literature. For patients in whom this self-limited condition develops, reassurance should serve as the mainstay of therapy.

Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita and inflammatory bowel disease.

Three patients had epidermolysis bullosa acquisita in association with Crohn's disease. We believe that epidermolysis bullosa acquisita should be included among the extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel disease. This article describes the diagnostic criteria, treatment, and other systemic diseases associated with epidermolysis bullosa acquisita.

Isolation of the 12 S globulin from rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and characterization as a "neutral" protein. On seed proteins. Part 13.

An isolation procedure for the 12 S rapeseed globulin is described which includes precipitation by dialysis, purification using gel chromatography on Sephadex G-200, and ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex A-50. The isolated globulin represents a neutral protein with an isoelectric point at pH 7.25--determined by isoelectric focusing--and a relation of the acidic to basic amino acid residues (epsilon Glu, Asp--Amide ammonia: epsilon Arg, Lys, His) of 1.0. As in other storage globulins high contents of glutamic (19%) and aspartic (10%) acid and a low content of sulphur containing amino acids are characteristic for the amino acid composition. Amongst the basic amino acids arginine has the highest percentage (7%). Opposite to results of other authors the sugar content of the globulin is low (0.5%). From the amino acid composition an average hydrophobicity according to Bigelow was calculated which amounts to be 1041 cal/res. (4.36 kJ/res.).

Genital herpes simplex--concepts and treatment.

Genital herpes simplex is an increasingly common venereal disease caused by either herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2. The disease can be manifested in a primary and/or recurrent form, the clinical features and complications of which are reviewed. Potential problems include psychosocial difficulties, neonatal herpes simplex infections, and the possibility of an oncogenic role in cervical cancer. Diagnostic modalities, prophylactic measures, and management technics are discussed.

[Chemical modification of proteins. 5. Modification of the 11-S-globulin from sunflower seed by reaction with dialdehyde starch].

Dialdehyde starch (DAS) reacts unspecifically with the amino acid residues of the 11 S globulin from sunflower seed. The modification of the protein causes a decrease of the content of each amino acid. Their blocking reaches maximum values at high pH levels (9,5) and high concentration of protein (5%). Especially high reactivity is shown by arginine as well as by the hydrophobic amino acids isoleucine, valine, and proline, and furthermore by histidine, lysine, asparagine (aspartic acid), and glutamine (glutamic acid). By reaction with DAS at pH 8.0 70% of the amino groups are blocked within 6 h; on the contrary, glyoxale blocks only 30% of the amino groups. Owing to the blockage of charged amino acid groups, a shift of the isoelectric point of the protein to a lower pH (4,3-4,4) takes place; this effect can be followed for 2 days. As a result of the reaction with DAS, only small amounts (10-15%) of intermolecular crosslinkage products with sedimentation coefficients of 17 S and greater than 17 S were formed. But by means of SDS-gel electrophoresis, dimers and trimers of the polypeptide chains in the protein were detected.

Somatostatin inhibits urinary cyclic AMP excretion in diabetic rats.

Short term (30 min) infusion of cyclic somatostatin (50 microgram/rat), insulin (1 U/rat) or the two together significantly suppressed urinary cyclic AMP excretion in streptozotocin-diabetic rats. While somatostatin tended to increase cyclic GMP excretion, insulin had an opposite effect in diabetic but not in normal rats. It is suggested that somatostatin suppresses cyclic AMP excretion by inhibiting directly adenylate cyclase in liver and perhaps in other organs. The possibility that suppression of urinary cyclic AMP is due to inhibition of glucagon secretion is also considered.

[Isolation and characterization of main albumin fractions of seeds from sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and rape (Brassica napus L.)].

The main fractions of the albumins from sunflower and rapeseeds (isolated by means of precipitation with ammonium sulphate or tannin + caffeine and subsequent gel chromatography) are low-molecular, very basic proteins. Their molecular weights range from 10 000 to 16 000, and their isoelectric points (determined by isoelectric focusing and free electrophoresis) are situated at pH greater than 10.0. From the circular dichroism in the wavelength range from 200 to 240 nm it is deduced that the main fraction of the rape albumin is a well-structured protein with 40-46% alpha-helix in aqueous and salt-containing solutions. Denaturation by heating is achieved only at temperatures about 100 degrees C and pH values greater than 9. 20% alpha-helix are left after the action of 8 M urea. This conformational stability is explained by the presence of disulphide linkages in the molecule.

Albumins

[Isolation of proteins with complex forming agents].

Taking vegetable albumins for models, the authors report of the possibilities of isolating proteins (which cannot be precipitated isoelectrically) by using their property of forming complexes with tannin or poly-anions. The precipitation of proteins with dextran sulphate or polyphosphates, which is due to electrostatic interaction, depends on the pH value and the electrolyte content of the solution. Under appropriate experimental conditions, protein yields of 100% are achieved. By means of tannin, the proteins are completely precipitated in a wide range of pH. The protein component of the poly-anion-containing complexes is isolated by precipitation with salt or by thermal coagulation after dissolving of the complexes. The isolation of protein from the tannin complexes is preferably realized by reaction with coffeine.
