Local current field radiofrequency (LCF-RF) hyperthermia was used to treat 38 superficial skin tumours (predominantly squamous cell carcinomas) of the nose, face and ears in 35 cats. LCF-RF hyperthermia was applied at 50 degrees C for 60 seconds at single or multiple sites depending on the tumour size. Each cat was observed over a four-month period after treatment and 14 out of 35 cases were also available for re-evaluation eight months after treatment. Tumours which had not resolved completely within one month after the initial treatment were re-treated. LCF-RF hyperthermia is most suited for the treatment of superficial skin tumours (<5 mm diameter). Ninety-two per cent (12/13) of tumours of this dimension showed some regression and 69% (9/13) completely resolved. Larger tumours >5mm diameter) were also successfully treated. 54% (8/14) regressed but only 14% (2/14) completely resolved. LCF-RF hyperthermia is not recommended for the treatment of tumours of the pinnae as 5 of the 6 tumours at this site failed to respond.

The prevalence of chlamydial genital infection was studied in 177 prostitutes in Iran; 100 in Teheran and 77 in the port of Bandar Abbas. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated in eight (6.9%) of 116 patients with valid cultures. Type-specific antibodies were found against C trachomatis serotypes D to K (genital serotypes) in 94.2% and against serotypes A to C (trachoma serotypes) in 2% of the prostitutes. Type-specific IgM at a titre of greater than or equal to 8, indicating current infection, was found in 29.2%, whereas type-specific IgG at a titre greater than or equal to 64, suggesting a current or recent infection, was present in 71.5%. The lower chlamydial isolation rate in these women may have been due to previous treatment with antichlamydial drugs and because of immune responses resulting from repeated reinfection with chlamydiae. The results indicate that in Iran prostitutes are commonly infected with C trachomatis and are probably a major reservoir of chlamydial genital infection.
Twenty patients with presumptive herpetic iridocyclitis without active corneal inflammation received either topical idoxuridine 0.5% or acyclovir 3% ointment. The uveitis of all ten patients treated with acyclovir resolved within one to eight weeks. Four of ten patients treated with idoxuridine worsened but subsequently responded to topical prednisolone 0.3%. The pathogenesis of herpetic iridocyclitis is discussed with a literature review.
Serum samples collected from dogs routinely presented at a clinic between June 1974 and October 1980 were tested for the presence of haemagglutination inhibition (HI) titres to canine parvovirus. The first positive titre (>1:320) was demonstrated in serum collected in October 1979. The first confirmed clinical case of canine parvovirus enteritis was diagnosed by the authors in July 1979. In addition, between 1st December 1980 and 1st March 1981, serum samples were collected from 106 healthy dogs which were presented for canine parvovirus vaccination for the first time. Twenty-four dogs (approx. 23%) showed HI titres >1:320 indicating probable previous canine parvovirus infection. Therefore approx. 80% of dogs in the clinic area were at risk at that time and vaccination should have protected them from infection.
A nine-month-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was examined because it could not withdraw its tongue into its mouth and had difficulty eating and drinking. These clinical signs were first observed when the dog was two months of age. On percussion of the tongue a dimple could be produced and there was electromyographic evidence of myotonia. Histological examination showed replacement of muscle fibres by adipose tissue, focal areas of myonecrosis, neutrophil infiltration and proliferation of sub-sarcolemmal nuclei. These changes were considered to be consistent with a primary myopathy similar to paramyotonia in man. No related dogs were found to be affected.

Nutrient intake and alcohol consumption were studied in a 15% random sample of a predominantly white upper-middle class suburban community in Southern California. Based on 24-h dietary recall, 51% of the 691 men and women aged 30 to 90 yr in the study population had consumed an average of 30 g alcohol during the preceding 24 h. In general, alcohol-derived calories were added to the diet, and did not replace calories derived from other nutrients. Consequently, alcohol consumers had a significantly higher total caloric intake than did nondrinkers. Dietary differences were greatest in moderate drinkers, who tended to consume fewer nonalcohol-derived calories, and less of most specific nutrients. Although dietary differences in moderate drinkers were similar in men and women, statistically significant differences in women were limited to carbohydrate consumption. Moderate drinking men consumed significantly less protein, fat, carbohydrate, and cholesterol. These dietary differences suggest one mechanism whereby moderate alcohol consumption might reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Although alcohol intake resulted in an increase in total calories consumed, alcohol drinkers were not more obese than nondrinkers. Since similar proportions of drinkers and nondrinkers exercised regularly, these data may suggest that alcohol calories are not fully utilized.
In order to test the efficacy of topically applied cyclosporin-A in preventing corneal allograft rejection, existing rabbit models were modified to produce a new model in which the allograft reaction could be consistently initiated solely as a result of corneal transfer without any additional means of sensitisation. With this model, which reflects clinical corneal grafting more closely than many previous models, cyclosporin-A 1% drops applied to the recipient eye 5 times daily for 4 weeks inhibited corneal graft rejection. When cyclosporin-A 1% drops were applied to corneal allografts for 13 weeks, 44% of grafts remained clear 180 days after transplantation. No side effects were observed that could be attributed to topically applied cyclosporin-A.
The prevalence of chlamydial infection of the urethra was studied in 172 consecutive male patients attending a sexually transmitted disease clinic in Teheran. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated in 8.8% of the patients with a valid culture result. Of the five isolates serotyped, two were serotype E and three were serotypes G, H, and K. Type-specific antibodies against C trachomatis serotypes D to K were found in 16% of patients, and IgM, indicating current infection, was detected in 12%. Type-specific antibodies against serotypes A to C (trachoma agent) were detected in 5.4%. The low chlamydial isolation rate may have been due to the inclusion of a large number of patients with a mild or trivial urethritis or a history of previous treatment with antichlamydial drugs. The results indicate that in Iran where trachoma is still endemic, chlamydial infection of the urethra does occur in the urban population and is caused by serotypes D to K.

Clinical features of 152 patients with herpetic keratitis after a five-year observation period were analyzed. When compared with dendritic ulceration, geographic ulcers that had been symptomatically present for a longer time were more likely to have been treated with a topical steroid and took longer to heal. After treatment of the corneal ulceration, 40% of the patients experienced a recurrent herpetic ulcer, 25% experienced disciform or irregular stromal keratouveitis, 5% experienced ocular hypertension, and 6% had a decrease in visual acuity caused by corneal scarring. Recurrent ulcerative herpetic keratitis occurred more frequently in men and in patients who entered the study with a history or previous herpetic ulceration.
We treated 25 patients with dendritic keratitis with debridement and 3% acyclovir ointment and another 25 with acyclovir alone. The patients were randomly assigned to the two treatment groups. There were only minimal adverse effects in both groups. The combination of debridement and acyclovir produced a significantly more rapid healing rate than did acyclovir alone. Factors associated with prolonged healing time were duration of symptoms (longer than one week), length of the epithelial defect (greater than 4 mm), proximity of the defect to the corneoscleral limbus (less than 2 mm), and the presence of stromal inflammation.
