A simple method for measuring a picogram of acetylcholine using the clam (Mya arenaria) heart.

1. A simple and reliable method is described for assaying 1 pg or less of acetylcholine (ACh) using a strip of clam (Mya arenaria) heart.2. Clam heart preparations generally are extremely selective for ACh. The preparation described is at least 10(5) times less sensitive to the following: acetyl coenzyme A, adrenaline, choline, dopamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid, glutamic acid, histamine, 5-hydroxytryptamine and noradrenaline.3. Because this preparation is one of the most sensitive known for detecting ACh, it should prove useful for assaying particularly low levels of this substance in biological extracts.

Alcohol and recall: state-dependent effects in man.

Male vollunteers performed four memory tasks either while sober or lunder effects of alcohol. Twenty-four hours later they were tested under the same or different conditions. In tasks measuiring recall and interference, learning transfer was better when the subject was intoxicated during both sessions than when he was intoxicated only during the learning session. In a task measuring recognition, transfer was not significantly affected by changing state. Thus, alcohol appears to produce "dissociated" or state-dependent effects in man, but not all forms of memory are equally sensitive to the phenomenon.

Beyond TV: Viewdata & its potential for fund raising.

Viewdata, a two-day information service that links computers with home TV sets, is likely to revolutionize American fund raising when it arrives in the U.S., claims the author. She presents the system's actual and possible applications for fund raising, drawing upon the experience of two charitable organizations in the United Kingdom that are already using viewdata with great success.

Baylor University Medical Center system.

In today's health care environment, the hospital's relationship to its medical staff can mean the difference between success and failure. As opposed to the current system, the medical staff of the future must be organized and strong, yet flexible enough to undergo the changes necessary for "venturing." This article describes how one University Medical Center organized its physicians and medical staff to meet the changing needs of the surrounding Texas community and the organization itself. Focusing on today's health care environment and the concept of venturing, this article unveils the special relationship between a medical center and its medical staff.

Phase I study of high-dose cytarabine and cisplatin in patients with advanced malignancy.

Nineteen patients with advanced malignancy participated in a phase I trial of high-dose cytarabine (ara-C) and cisplatin in combination. Dose and schedule were based on laboratory data indicating synergy for concurrent use of these drugs. Cisplatin (100 mg/m2) was administered during the 2nd and 3rd hours of a 3-hour ara-C infusion. The ara-C dose was escalated in subsequent patients following a starting dose of 1 g/m2. Two brief responses were noted. The study was terminated prematurely due to protracted (several weeks) nausea, occasional vomiting, and severe lassitude.
