Influence of 1-methyl-3-keto-4-phenylquinuclidinium bromide on rat tissue monoamine levels in vivo.

The effects of 1-methyl-3-keto-4-phenylquinuclidinium bromide (MA540) on tissue monoamine levels in male rats have been compared to those of guanethidine. Neither compound influenced norepinephrine (NE) or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) levels in brain or epinephrine (E) levels in adrenal medulla. MA540 is about twice as potent as guanethidine as a heart NE depleting agent at both 8 and 24 h after drug administration. The durations of action of the compounds are similar. Unlike guanethidine, MA540 does not deplete NE in small intestine, which suggests that the drug may not elicit guanethidine-like intestinal side effects.

Membrane antigens specific for human lymphoid cells in the dividing phase.

Heteroantisera were raised in rabbits against human thymocytes or Burkitt's lymphoma EBI cells. After suitable absorption, the sera were specific for thymocytes and T lymphoblasts, or B lymphoblasts and several lymphoblastoid cell lines. The specificity of the antisera was confirmed by preparing purified populations of T or B lymphocytes on immunoabsorbent columns, followed by mitogenic stimulation with phytohemagglutinin. The antisera did not react with normal resting lymphocytes.

A male sterilization clinic.

In the Cardiff Family Planning Association Clinic 330 men have been sterilized during the past 20 months. Selection for operation was made after a detailed discussion between husband, wife, and a Family Planning Association doctor, and with the general practitioner's agreement. The outpatient operation was performed under local anaesthetic by a surgeon. It was regarded as being successful or complete when two semen analyses showed azoospermia at an interval of one month.
