BACKGROUND: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate continuing education (CE) offerings presented by the Kentucky Nurses Association during a 10-year period. METHOD: Data were collected and analyzed from 37 CE offerings (N = 474 respondents). RESULTS: Findings revealed that the majority of the respondents reported that the CE offerings were useful, stimulated them to seek further information, and resulted in acquisition of significant knowledge or skills for nursing education or practice. However, fewer than half of the respondents reported they were able to implement changes in nursing education or practice as a result of the CE offerings. CONCLUSION: Findings supported the usefulness of CE in nursing education and practice and the need for further research evaluating CE and the correlation between CE and nursing education and practice.
Pressures to control supply costs in hospitals will continue to escalate. As materiel managers we must become increasingly involved in analyzing and controlling these costs. This increased involvement will require significantly more cost and usage information, especially for non-stock items. It will also require skills to manipulate this information after it is obtained, and to perform meaningful analysis relating to the hospital's financial statements. Materiel managers must respond to these demands now. Training in hospital accounting, financial analysis and automation can be obtained from almost any community college. Additionally, most hospital CFOs will readily discuss these issues and can provide insight into the factors important in their respective institutions. By focusing on those factors which truly affect overall supply cost and inventory values, the materiel manager can assume one of the most significant management roles within the hospital. This role may include promotion into hospital administration or may simply include the expansion of the materiel manager's responsibilities. In either case, managers who assume responsibility for overall supply costs and who exhibit the skills needed to provide real answers will have carved themselves an essential niche in their institutions.
The current health care environment mandates an outcomes-driven approach to care. Outcomes-based, and practice-driven, nursing research can be an essential organizational investment to maintain viability. Registered nurses in Kentucky appear motivated and ready to participate in and use relevant nursing research in their practice environment. Administrative support for those endeavors can be a key component in the successful conduct of clinical research and translation into clinical practice. Participation in research endeavors by both nursing staff and management can support the value of nursing in the current health care delivery system. This study adds to the literature in the area of research utilization in that random selection, a relatively large sample size, and all RNs in the state (not just members of the professional nursing organization) were used. Hopefully, the results of this study can be used to bring together all important parties in the research utilization process--experts, quality assurance nurses, managers in control of resources, risk managers, and those providing patient care.

A study estimating the extent to which the reading level of HIV educational brochures matches the reading ability (measured by educational attainment) of women attending public family planning clinics in Virginia shows that the mean reading level of the brochures sampled is grade 9.9. The educational attainment of 18% of Virginia family planning clients falls below this level. The mean reading level of brochures targeted to adolescents (grade 8.3) and the mean reading level of those targeted to minority women (grade 9.1) are significantly lower than the mean for all sampled brochures. Use of the targeted brochures would improve access to information on HIV prevention for 16% of adolescents and 6% of minority women who attend family planning clinics in Virginia.
A sample of 691 African American, Hispanic, and white pregnant teenage and adult women were interviewed in the prenatal setting. On their first prenatal visit, 182 (26%) women reported physical or sexual abuse within the past year. There were significant differences between the teens and adults, with a higher percentage of teens (31.6%) reporting abuse during the prior year than adults (23.6%). The rate of abuse during pregnancy was 21.7% for teens and 15.9% for adult women. Adult women scored significantly higher than teens on two measures of mental abuse. Mental abuse was significantly correlated with physical abuse for all subjects.
