[Remarks on the value of psychological efficiency diagnostics for the diagnosis and therapy of alcoholism--response to Szewczyk on our "Chronic alcoholism and psychological efficiency"].

For a clarification of different viewpoints with respect to the importance of efficiency-diagnostic studies in chronic alcoholism, First the question is studied whether there is a common basis of judgement with Szewczyk. On the basis of examples it is shown that there is no agreement with regard to essential facts and contrary conclusions are drawn. The necessity of efficiency-psychological studies of the amnestic psychosyndrome as a constituting components of alcoholic changes of the personality is, for example, derived from diagnostic and therapeutical questions concerning the degree of severity and the pattern of the course of the disease. In progressing alcoholism, the constituting component "amnestic psychosyndrome" is frequently the dominating component in the sense of a pronounced organic psychosyndrome. After long-term abstinence, remarkable improvements of cognitive performances have been found with differentiating efficiency-diagnostic methods. From these facts alone the conclusion can be drawn that there is a wide range of indications for efficiency-diagnostic longitudinal and cross-sectional studies in chronic alcoholics.

A quasi-elastic light scattering and cinematographic investigation of motile Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Quasi-elastic light scattering and cinematographical techniques were used to investigate the motility of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (wild type). It was found that quantitative information on the trajectory of motion was required for a meaningful interpretation of the autocorrelation functions. Two models for describing the oscillatory motion of the cell were developed; one based on the instantaneous forward-and-backward motion of the cell, and the other based on a sinusoidal perturbation to the average forward motion. Both models gave satisfactory agreement with the shape of the experimentally measured autocorrelation function, thus making it possible to use this measurement to determine mean progressive swimming velocities in a population of greater than 200 cells.

Quasi-elastic light-scattering spectra of swimming spermatozoa. Rotational and translational effects.

The electric field autocorrelation functions of light scattered from normal swimming bull spermatozoa are shown to be dependent on the mean head rotation frequency and not on the translational speed of the cells, as previously believed. This result was obtained from numerical generation of functions in which spermatozoa were modeled as Rayleigh-Gans-Debye ellipsoids having semiaxes a = 0.5 micrometer, b = 2.3 micrometer, and c = 9.0 micrometer. The magnitude of c required to achieve agreement with the experimental data is larger than the half-length of the head region of the cell. This implies that the midpiece, which also lies along c, contributes to the scattering power. Details regarding swimming trajectory and head orientation are included in the model. Analyses of the calculated functions and comparisons with experimentally determined ones suggest that at a scattering angle of 15 degrees the electric field autocorrelation function can be fit a simple Lorentzian whose half-width is inversely proportional to the scattering vector and the mean head rotational frequency.

[A paraneoplastic syndrome with symptoms of Harada's disease].

As a contribution to the question of participation of the central nervous system in paraneoplastic syndromes an unusual case of hypernephrotic carcinoma with heavy immunopathological disturbances and clinical symptoms like Harada's syndrome is reported. The development of the 63 years old patient's disease, the clinical, haematological, CSF-, biochemical and other laboratory as well as neuroradiological and electrophysiological findings are discussed in detail. Immunosuppressive treatment after nephrectomy repeatedly led to a distinct improvement.

The jamming avoidance response in Rhamphichthys rostratus: an alternative principle of time domain analysis in electric fish.

A Jamming Avoidance Response was found in the weakly electric fish Rhamphichthys rostratus, a South American pulse-Gymnotid. The analysis of the response suggests that it requires a key stimulus which is fundamentally different from that in previously described harmonic Gymnotids. It relies on a sensitivity for the direction of phase shifts of stimulus pulses relative to the fish's own electric organ discharge rather than on a sensitivity for beating frequencies.

[Pathophysiology of delirium].

Based on a series of known facts on clinical findings and changes in the metabolism of chronic alcoholics and delirious people the possible pathomechanism of cerebral imbalances is presented according to a synopsis. The clinical symptomatology, in particular vegetative symptoms and the coordination of reflexes - to which more attention should be paid than has been up to now - make delirium appear a diencephalic illness, the sympathicotonic and ergotropic development of which together with a preponderance of noradrenergic-adrenergic mechanisms, remains unexplained to this day.
