Effect of potato inhibitor of proteolytic enzymes on activity and morphology of the rat pancreas.

The effect of the inhibitor of proteolytic enzymes present in potatoes on morphology and activity of the rat pancreas was investigated administering the inhibitor with drinking water in doses of 50 and 100 mg to two groups of rats for 20 days. On the 21st day the exocrine activity of the pancreas was evaluated by the method of duodenal perfusion after previous hormonal stimulation of pancreatic secretion (secretin and cholecystokinin-pancreozymin 1 U CHR/100 g body weight), while morphology of the organ was assessed by histological methods. It was found that the inhibitor exerts a trophic effect on the rat pancreas, causing hypertrophy of acinar cells and raising the exocrine activity of the gland. The higher dose of the inhibitor had a more pronounced trophic effect.

Fine needle aspiration biopsy cytology of chondrosarcoma.

Fine needle aspirates of ten chondrosarcomas were evaluated, and the cytologic features of this tumor were described. Some malignant cells in the smears of chondrosarcoma resembled cells of an epithelial origin and could be misinterpreted as carcinoma cells. The morphologic features described for chondrosarcoma should be helpful in avoiding such a diagnostic error.

[Some parameters of Guerin cancer growth after exposure to Pielik (sodium salt of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate)].

Herbicide Pielik (sodium 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate) was tested with the aid of Guerin cancer animal model in 129 Wistar rats. An effect of this herbicide on the cancer growth dynamic (size and weight of the tumor), its malignancy (lymphatic nodes involvement), tumor-dependent animal cachexia (real body weight), and survival of rats depending on exposure period have been analysed. Aqueous solution of the herbicide was administered to animals of groups II, IV, V, and VI in the dose of 200 mg/kg body weight daily (1/3 LD50). Young rats were exposed to the herbicide during pre- and postnatal period till the death (groups III, IV and VI in the 80th day of life. Exposure to the herbicide was continued. Rats of all groups were sacrificed in the 16th, 20th, and 42nd day after implantation of Guerin cancer. Eight animals of each group were kept alive to assess survival. Accelerated growth of the tumor was noted in the animals exposed to the herbicide for the prolonged period of time (before and after birth). The same daily dose administered to the animals after weaning and continued to the 16th, 20th, and 42nd day of tumor development (group IV) has not significant effect on tumor growth rate. An increase in the incidence as well as earlier onset of metastases to auxillary and groin lymphatic nodes were seen in group VI in comparison with the control animals (group III).

[Biological properties of cytokines and their role in lung pathology].

In the past decade, cytokines came into focus as important multifunctional mediators regulating cellular functioning and intercellular connections. Particular cytokines may both inhibit and stimulate cells playing an important role in maintaining homeostasis of the normal tissue. In the majority of pathologies not individual cytokines but their complexes are involved. Numerous studies on cytokines are mainly aimed at evaluating the role of the following cytokines in pulmonary diseases: tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta), insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), interleukin-1 (IL-1), and recently interleukin-6 (IL-6). The possible physiologic significance and role of cytokines in lung diseases are surveyed.
