Numerical taxonomy of gram-negative, nonmotile, nonfermentative bacteria isolated during chilled storage of lamb carcasses.

A numerical taxonomic study using 75 characters was performed with 132 strains of gram-negative, nonmotile, nonfermentative bacteria selected on the basis of lack of motility and Gram reaction among 1,200 cultures isolated during aerobic storage of lamb carcasses. At the 80% similarity level (SSM), eight clusters were formed. Strains in clusters 1 to 6 could be identified as members of the family Moraxellaceae and, more specifically, as members of the Psychrobacter-[Moraxella] phenylpyruvica subgroup. Of these strains, clusters 1 and 2 (88 strains) were identified as [Moraxella] phenylpyruvica and cluster 3 (15 strains) was identified as Psychrobacter immobilis. Clusters 4, 5, and 6 were not identifiable with any species. Clusters 7 and 8 consisted of 14 strains considered nonmotile variants of Pseudomonas fragi. The highest separation indices corresponded to acid production from certain carbohydrates (melibiose, L-arabinose, and cellobiose). Although strains of Psychrobacter-Moraxella clusters were relatively frequently identified at the completion of slaughter, very few cultures were detected on spoiled carcasses. It appears, therefore, that this group of organisms has only low spoilage potential.

Pathogenesis of the lung in restrictive defects of Klinefelter's syndrome.

Patients with Klinefelter's syndrome show a high incidence of restrictive lung defects, the pathogenesis of which is not clear yet. We investigated the respiratory muscle force (PImax) and lung compliance in 13 patients with Klinefelter's syndrome who had not been receiving hormonal therapy for at least one year prior to being studied. Eleven were smokers and two were nonsmokers. None showed abnormalities of the chest wall. Five had normal lung volumes and eight showed a restrictive defect (TLC < 80 percent, VC < 85 percent, FEV1/FVC percent within normal values); DCOSB and arterial blood gases were within normal limits. PImax was similar in restricted (-115.9 +/- 26.7 cm H2O) and not restricted patients (-115.4 +/- 20.3 cm H2O), all within reference values. Lung compliance, however, was significantly decreased in the four patients studied (0.13 +/- 0.08 cm H2O-1) compared with five normal control subjects (0.29 +/- 0.05 cm H2O-1). We conclude that the likely cause of the lung restriction is a decrease of compliance of the lung matrix, probably related to the absence of testosterone.

Agenesis of seminal vesicles in infertile males: ultrasonic diagnosis.

We present the incidence of seminal vesicle agenesis and its association with deferens ductus agenesis in 141 males presenting with infertility. Transrectal ultrasonography was performed in every patient. Ten presented seminal vesicle agenesis (8 unilateral and 2 bilateral). Three had absence of the vas deferens on physical examination (3 of 7 with unilateral seminal vesicle agenesis and 1 of 2 with bilateral). Computed tomography confirmed the ultrasound findings. We emphasize the importance of the anomalies as a cause of infertility and the association with other genitourinary anomalies. Moreover, we state the necessity of transrectal ultrasound in the diagnosis.

[Dimethyl sulfoxide in the treatment of interstitial cystitis].

The paper presents the results obtained with endovesical dimethylsulphoxide in the treatment of interstitial cystitis in 30 women. Up to 80% patients showed clinical improvement with an average of 10 installations. Volume of maximal vesical capacity was increased in 24 patients (80%), the increase being greater than 100 cc in 10 cases. Presently, 24 (80%) patients remain under treatment, 14 with one instillation monthly and 10 once every six months. Six patients are fully asymptomatic without treatment after an average symptoms-free interval of 32 months. Since this is directly related to a decrease both in pain and miction frequency, the increase in vesical capacity appears to be a good improvement index. Dimethylsulphoxide in neither a healing nor a definite therapy but it seems to be effective in the management of this unknown disease.
