[Rhodamine B: a tracer of follicular keratinization (author's transl)].

The mixture at equal volumes of a 0.1 p. 100 solution of rhodamine B in distilled water and of a 0.25 p. 100 solution of toluidine blue in Walpole's pH 4.4 buffer dyes each pilar sheath differently. At the level of the medulla, the granules fix rhodamine B, so do the cortical cells at the level of the keratogenic zone. Once they are keratinized, however, cortical cells remain colorless. Concerning the cells of the inner root sheath, on the other hand, their trichohyaline granules are dyed by rhodamine B, whereas the keratinized cells turn dark blue under the effect of toluidine blue. The trichilemmal keratin both of the isthmus of the anagen hair and of the follicular sac becomes light red. This technique, which can be easily applied to the trichogram, allows us to identify more or less mature pilar anlages in in adnexal tumors, to differentiate keratinizing cysts and to trace various pathological keratins. Thanks to a chemical study, it was shown that the mixture rhodamine B-toluidine blue is only a mechanical mixture which works through its acide-bases properties.

[A new type of flagellar structure. Type 9+n].

The ultrastructural study of the Eoacanthocephala sperm cell shows a variation from 0 to 5 in the number of the axial fibers in the axoneme. All the species of the order Eoacanthocephala available to us show this variation; moreover, every individual possesses simultaneously several different structural types. So, we are dealing with a new flagellar organization: 9+n, with 0 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 5. In the Quadrigyridae and the Tenuisentidae families, n varies from 0 to 4, with a maximum of 2 for most individuals, exceptionally at 1 for some individuals. In the Neoechinorhynchidae family, n varies from 0 to 5 with a conspicuous prevalence of 3 (from 84 to 99%, according to the individual). These results prompted us to reexamine the two other orders of Acanthocephala in which the structural types 9+2 or 9+0 have been considered as fixed. Indeed, we have found a few flagella the structure of which is different from the prevalent one. It seems, therefore, that the number of the central fibers of the axoneme in the Acanthocephala sperm cell is never absolutely fixed.

[Ultrastructure of the spermatozoid of Centrorhynchus milvus Ward 1956 (Paleacanthocephala, Polymorphidae)].

The Centrorhynchus milvus spermatozoon is a filiform cell. The free part of the flagellum measure 2 mu and is situated in front of the gamete. The centriole is no more visible but an axial tubule formation is found at the anterior extremity of the flagellum. This Polymorphidae spermatozoon shows a reversed anatomy like the one we described for the first time with an acanthocephala wich belongs to the Rhadinorhynchidae family.

[Crystallization of reptile hemoglobin during its digestion in a pentastomide].

The hemoglobin of the lizard Tarentola annularis has been studied within erythrocytes being digested in the gut of a parasitic pentastomide, Raillietiella sp. The hemoglobin is crystallized in the form of bundles comprised of numerous tubules (up to 2000). These tubules are simple or complex. Simple tubules are 50 nm in diameter; their wall is made up of two electron-opaque rings, separated by a clear ring. Complex tubules are up to 100 nm in diameter and show as many as 13 concentric walls. High magnification of transverse sections of simple tubules show 96 granules; each opaque ring is made up of 48 granules. Human hemoglobin is known to crystallize as 18-nm tubules, the wall of which is made up of six molecules; comparison of these data with our observations indicates that transverse sections of tubules of crystallized lizard hemoglobin should contain 24 molecules. Thus, each molecule of crystallized lizard hemoglobin consists of four granules; these granules may be considered as globin molecules. Erythrocytes in fresh lizard blood do not show crystallized hemoglobin; however, in blood treated with sodium bisulfite, they show tubules similar to that found in the parasite.

Reinvestigation of spermatic flagella structure: the teleostean Cyprinodontidae.

The study of 7 genera and 15 species of teleostean fishes belonging to the family Cyprinodontidae shows a similar morphology of mobile spermatozoa and a wide diversity of structure of the spermatic flagellum. The flagellar membrane has one, two, or three lateral expansions depending on the species. Peripheral doublets of axonema show only the external arm, except for two species that completely lack them. Intratubular differentiations (ITD) are present in A or B tubules of peripheral doublets as in central tubules of some species, whereas others are totally devoid of them. The ITD can affect all doublets or preferentially doublets 1, 5, and 6. These variations may be due to neutral mutations.

Cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc in five toothed whale species of the Mediterranean Sea.

The cadmium, lead, copper, and zinc levels were measured in six organs (lung, liver, kidney, skin, muscle, and bone) from 18 specimens of toothed whales, belonging to five species, found stranded along the Corsican coast between November 1993 and December 1998. The five species examined were the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus, the common dolphin Delphinus delphis, the striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba, the pilot whale Globicephala melas, and the Risso's dolphin Grampus griseus. The values obtained demonstrate that there is a great variability in the accumulation of toxic metals. A comparison of the values with those obtained in other geographical regions also demonstrates an extensive variability in metal levels. The presence of metals in the stomach contents of three of the individuals studied shows that the food source is responsible for a significant input of pollutants to the whales. Measured pollutant levels in whales are thus the result of an accumulation occurring throughout the animal's life.
