Observations on the phosphate status and intracellular pH of intact cells, protoplasts and chloroplasts from photosynthetic tissue using phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance.

Individual pools of intracellular inorganic phosphate (Pi) can be observed in the dark in intact cells, protoplasts and chloroplasts from photosynthetic tissue by using 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.). Estimates for the pH of vacuolar and extravacuolar compartments are reported although it is shown that intracellular pH is determined by the pH of the suspending medium. Mannose treatment of asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) cells and spinach (Spinacia oleracea) protoplasts results in the inhibition of photosynthesis. The mechanism of mannose phosphate sequestration of free Pi is supported by the 31P n.m.r. spectra of mannose-treated tissue. There is a fundamental difference in 31 P n.m.r. spectra of mannose-treated spinach protoplasts and asparagus cells, reflecting a difference in the availability of vacuolar Pi for cellular metabolism in these species. The 31P n.m.r. spectrum of intact spinach chloroplasts is reported.

[Structure of supply--homes for the aged--as exemplified by a city (Nuremberg)].

Colloquies about the social-political instrument "old people's house" are not only matter of discussion for moral-theologicals, social-ethicals, gerontologists of different subjects, social-politicioner and practitioner of old people's work. Old people entering to an old people's house, are often involved with severe personal problems. Theoretical could the entrance be characterized as a break in biography.--Description and analyses of the structure of supply of the instrument "old people's house" as an example (here: city of Nuremberg) may help to clarify personal problems: aspects of the sociological point of view are "institutionalisation and comfort", of an economical point of view "prices for accommodation" and of an staff-economical point of view "the rate of care". The results shows among others, that there is a differentiation in the structure of supply.

High-pressure liquid chromatographic analysis of pramoxine hydrochloride in high lipoid aerosol foam dosage form.

A rapid and quantitative method for the determination of pramoxine hydrochloride by high-pressure liquid chromatography is presented. The drug is extracted as the salt from a preparation with a high lipoid composition by partitioning it to the aqueous phase of an ether-methanol-water-acetic acid system. The extract is chromatographed on an octadecylsilane bonded packing with a methanol-water-acetic acid-methanesulfonic acid mobile phase. The time required for each separation is approximately 6 min. Analytical recoveries of 100.4 +/- 1.5% were obtained.

Endocrine differentiation in mucoid carcinoma of the breast.

Mucoid carcinoma of the breast is not a single homogeneous entity. It comprises two main variants separable on structural and cytological grounds and a smaller transitional type. The salient pathological differences are detailed. One variant is usually arygrophilic and contains dense core granules of the type seen in endocrine tumours. Both endocrine and amphicrine cells have been identified in this sub-type. The relationship of this endocrine variant of mucoid carcinoma to other argryophil carcinomas (so-called 'carcinoids') of the breast is discussed.

[Social-gerontological theories of the situation in the lives of the aged--a discussion on geroprophylaxis (author's transl)].

The contribution discusses the most important theories which chiefly refer in a mainly sociologically orientated way to the explanation of the various forms of the process of aging: activity- and disengagement-theory. Both theories have had an exceptionally strong influence on scientific soziological research since they had become known and the result of this research has made a modification of the theoretical onset necessary. The conclusions to be drawn under socio-economical points of view under, respect of the theory of socialisation, sociology of knowledge and socioeducational points of view will be explained at the end of the contribution.

A questionnaire survey of family practice physicians' perceptions of bereavement care.

Survey responses were obtained from 113 family physicians in an exploratory investigation of bereavement care by family physicians. Respondents generally indicated that they believed that bereavement presented significant health risks to their patients and that the identification and treatment of bereaved patients was an important part of their role. However, physicians were highly variable in how they reported identifying and responding to bereaved patients in terms of counseling, addressing spiritual concerns, and medically treating symptoms. The "grief-responsive" physician is described based on these data. We document the interest and need for training in bereavement care.
