[Caries-statistical results after 15 years of fluoridation in Basle].

Fluoride (1 ppm) has been added to the drinking water in Basel, Switzerland, since May of 1962. The effects of this fluoridation on the teeth was studied at five year intervals in a total of 9042 school children between the ages of seven and fifteen. During the course of the control examinations, a statistically significant reduction in the frequency and experience of caries for all age groups was observed. Caries were reduced by 60% and more. The increase in the number of children with caries-free teeth in all age groups was statistically significant.

[Dental-stomatological problems before, during and after tumor radiotherapy i n the head and neck region].

Adequate dental procedures and preventive measures prior to, during and after completion of radiotherapy for tumors in the head-neck region are necessary in order to avoid postirradiation complications such as bone necrosis. The measures to be taken are described in detail. Cooperation between radiologist, physician and dentist minimizes postirradiation complications.

[Is the reason for a decrease in dental caries after fluoridation in Basle the delay in tooth eruption?].

In several previous reports it was shown that water fluoridation in Basel has significantly reduced caries frequency in 7--15 year-old schoolchildren. This reduction is only for a small part caused by certain time differences in the eruption of the teeth. Neither can it be explained by instruction and motivation for better nutrition and home care, because mouth hygiene of the Basel schoolchildren has not improved over the last decade. Also, a reduction in sugar consumption could not be observed. Therefore, the conclusion seems justified that water fluoridation is mainly responsible for the reduction of caries.

[Changes in the oral mucosa in the aging patient].

The most frequently observed diseases of the oral mucosa in ageing patients are: leucoplacic changes, lichen ruber planus, pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigoid and the Gougerot-Sjögren syndrome. However, there are other affections which are described in their characteristic symptomatology: --whitish changes--changes by pigments--aphtous or aphtoid changes--bullous and erosive changes--tongue burning and glossodynia--tumorous and exulcerative changes. The different diagnostic aspects are particularly explained.
