Sections of the jaws from marmosets of all ages were impregnated with silver nitrate to demonstrate the intrabony course of the alveolar fibers of the periodontal ligament. As the interseptal bone undergoes a period of resorption and apposition, the intrabony alveolar fibers also are lost and reformed. Age changes were noted in the insertion depth of the alveolar fibers. A continuum of fibers traversing the alveolar septum could not be determined.
Forty patients in active retention following orthodontic tooth movement into premolar extraction sites were examined for the occurrence and distribution of interdental gingival clefts, defined as an invagination of interproximal tissue with definite mesial and distal peaks having a depth of at least 1 mm. Fourteen of the forty orthodontic patients demonstrated clefts in one or more of the premolar extraction sites. No clefts were observed in premolar areas of orthodontic patients who did not require premolar extraction or in patients without previous orthodontic treatment. Interdental clefts occurred most frequently at the buccal aspect of mandibular first premolar extraction sites. The presence of the cleft appears to have clinical implications, both in terms of orthodontic relapse, and maintenance of gingival health.
Adult cotton top marmosets made niacin deficient by long-term dietary deprivation, developed a syndrome characterized by anorexia, weight loss, weakness, diarrhea, dermatitis, enterocolitis and stomatitis. The stomatitis was highlighted by a necrotizing gingivitis and periodontitis and by an ulcerative and atrophic glossitis.
Saliva and serum electrolyte concentrations were monitored in 30 patients given a course of xerostomia-producing cancer radiotherapy. The mean flow rate of stimulated whole saliva decreased 83.3% during a 6-week treatment period. The striking reduction in saliva output was accompanied by significant increases in saliva Na+, Cl-, Ca++, Mg++ and Prot.- concentrations and by a decrease in saliva HCO3- content. The xerostomic saliva was more concentrated and had a greater salinity than the pretreatment saliva in each instance. In contrast, none of the serum electrolytes measured was significantly altered by the subtotal salivary shutdown.

Electron microscopy of near-term placentas of two cottontop marmosets (Saguinus oedipus) revealed, in one placenta, the presence of budding and mature C-type virus particles associated with the basal trophoblast. The particles were morphologically similar to those observed by other investigators in placentas of other primate species.
Adult rhesus monkeys were used as experimental analogues to investigate vascularization, revascularization, and bone healing associated with total maxillary osteotomy. Microangiographic and histologic studies showed minimal transient vascular ischemia, minimal osteonecrosis, and early osseous union. Transection of the greater palatine arteries had no discernible effect on the circulation to the teeth and bone in the maxilla and its enveloping soft tissues. The results of experiments in animals and clinical studies indicate that palatal mucosa and labial-buccal gingiva provide an adequate nutrient pedicle for single-stage total maxillary osteotomies.
