Twenty-four-hour esophageal pH monitoring was performed in thirty patients with cardiac cancer on the 13rd to 18th postoperative day in order to understand the condition of gastroesophageal reflux (GER), the value of commonly used operative procedures and the effect of patients sleeping position for preventing GER. GER parameters were higher than those of normal subjects (P < 0.001), but there were only 60% patients who had typical GER symptoms. No significant differences were found between anastomoses in abdomen and chest, encasing-in style, and "scarf" style (P > 0.05). Patients sleeping with upper body raised for 30 degrees had much lower GER parameters than those of controls. Manual anastomosis often used now couldn't decrease GER. All patients with cardiac cancer have postoperative GER though they had no typical symptoms of GER, but GER was avoided during sleeping with upper body erected.
To research into the causes of sjögren's syndrome, we investigated the lacrimal gland tissues of 6 cases of sjogren's syndriome by using electronmicroscopy and immunochemical methods. The results revealed that at the early stage the lacrimal gland cells showed degeneration, irregular arrangement and many intracellular vacuoles. At the middle stage, some lymphocytes infliltrated into the gland tissues. And at the advanced stage, lymphocytes and collagenous fibers were there in substitution of gland cells.
In this study, ligation of portal branches feeding 90% liver mass was performed in rats. After the ligation, 10% liver mass with portal blood perfusion underwent a progressive hypertrophy. It gained weight against the control by about 5-fold at the 14th day. The measurement of incorporation rate of H3-thymidine showed that the DNA synthesis increased rapidly in the liver tissue keeping portal blood supply. It reached a peak at 24 hours and retumed to normal at 7 days after the ligation. The ligated liver lobes under-went an atrophy gradually. With the pretreatment of such portal branch ligation 2 weeks before, 80% rats survived from the resection of ligated liver lobes which composed of 90% preceding liver mass. In the control group of sham portal branch ligation, all rats died within a short period of time after 90% hepatectomy. This study demonstrated that a secondary extended hepatectomy following the ligation of portal branches feeding 90% liver mass could prevent acute hepatic failure induced by primary 90% hepatectomy in rats.
An immunoturbidimetric assay(ITA) for quantification of human serum apolipoprotein B100 (apoB100) was developed. The assay is sensitive, rapid, specific, easily automatic and thus convenient for routine work. The minimu measurable concentration of apoB100 was 3.1 micrograms in each assay. The standard curve with a working range of 0.34-1.79 g/L was plotted. The between and within assay coefficients of variation were 1.13%-3.48% and 2.91%-4.48% respectively. The recovery was 99.23% +/- 3.57%. The mean serum concentration of apoB100 in 100 normal subjects was 0.821 +/- 0.165 g/L. The correlation coefficient of RID for apoB100 to ITA was 0.8626(P < 0.001).
Seven compounds were isolated from Aster poliothamnus. By means of spectral evidences and crystal analysis, their structures were elucidated as beta-sitosterol, beta-amyrin, daucosterol, spinasterol, stigmasterol, dammara-20, 24-dien-3 beta-ol and epifriedlinol.
OBJECTIVE: Searching for novel gene related to human hepatoma. METHODS: Twelve EST (expressed sequence tag) clones were examined with Northern blot analysis, looking for the gene(s) differentially expressed in hepatoma versus surrounding noncancerous hepatic tissue, and then compared with Gene Databases. RESULTS: Northern blot analysis showed that EST clone F9391 expressed at high level in all of the 6 hepatocellular carcinoma samples, but at low level in the surrounding noncancerous hepatic tissues and in 2 cases of normal liver tissues. Nucleotide sequencing indicated that this clone belonged to a novel gene that had not included in the Gene Databases (EMBL 96.6). CONCLUSION: F9391 gene is a novel gene overexpressed in hepatocellular carcinoma. Being related to cell proliferation, it might play an important role in liver oncogenesis. Forthermore, it may be used as a new marker for diagnosis and new target for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.
Six compounds were isolated from Begonia evansiana. By means of TLC, mp, 1H and 13CNMR, they were idenified as beta-sitosterol, beta-amyrin, daucosterol, stigmasterol, stigmasterol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside and 4', 5', 7-trihydroxy-flavone-6-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside. All the compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time.
This paper reports of 14 cases of thymic carcinoma. Most of them with symptoms of chest pain, chest stuffy and discomfort, but without combined with extrathoracic syndromes. The tumors always were large in size and frequently invaded adjacent organs, hence with low resection rate. In this series, complete resection of tumor only 2 cases, partial resection in 7 cases, exploratory thoracotomy in 5 cases. Thymic carcinoma was an extremely malignant tumor with extensive invasion intrathoracally and early metastasis extrathoracally. The common sites of metastasis were bone, liver, lung and extrathoracic lymph nodes. Adjuvant therapy postoperatively was given to all patients. Follow-up of 1-8 years showed 10 cases death, of which 5 cases died within the first year after surgery, 3 cases within the second year. Four patients were still alive so far, in which 3 patients were within 1.5 years postoperatively. Pathological studies revealed 9 cases of squamous epithelial cell thymic carcinoma, 3 of lymphoepithelioma-like thymic carcinoma and 2 of small cell undifferentiate thymic carcinoma.
A technique of vital microcirculation observation and electron microscope were used to study the microcirculation in hamster cheek pouch, in which an acute inflammatory lesion was induced by oxygen free radicals (OFR). At the same time, the effect of superoxide dismutase (SOD) on the microcirculation was assessed. The results showed that in the model group the microcirculation disturbance in the cheek pouch was very serious. However, in the SOD group the microcirculation was almost unchangable.
A study of therapeutic efficacy was carried out in 118 patients with oral mucositis (recurrent oral aphthous ulceration, erosive lichen planus, herptic stomatitis and infectious oral mucosal hematoma) at random. As a topical medication, Koukangning gargle was applied to 59 patients of the experimental group, 29 patients of the control group 1 applied Dobell's solution to rinse their mouths, and 30 patients of the control group 2 applied Koutai solution. A satisfactory result was observed in the experimental group, its effectiveness and effective rates rose more than those of control group 1 at both treatments for 3 days and 6 days. Between the two groups, there were markedly significant difference (P < 0.005, P < 0.01, P < 0.005, P < 0.005). Koukangning gargle was nontoxic and no side-effects in the clinical tests. Its efficacy was no significant difference compared with the control group 2. Experimental study demonstrates that it possesses anti-inflamation effect and excellent antibiotic effect, therefore it is a new gargle for rinse mouth combined traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine.
Model of motion sickness (MS) was induced in rats by accelerating and decelerating vertical rotation for 60 min. The contents of Ach, NA, A and 5-HT and the activity of AchE in brain and blood of rats were examined after 60 min of rotation. The results showed: NA contents and AchE activity decreased significantly while A and 5-HT increased in rat's brain. Levels of Ach, NA and A in blood were increased. The results suggested that MS may be related to the imbalance of transmitters in the central nervous system resulting in the reduction of central arousal, and the imbalance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between radiation and leukemia. METHODS: Leukemia incidences (1950-1990) in 27011 diagnostic X-ray workers and in 25782 other medical specialists employed between 1950 and 1980 in China were compared. RESULTS: The relative risk (RR) of leukemia in the diagnostic X-ray workers was 2.25-fold (95% C1=1.59-3.09, P<0.001) higher than that in the control group. The average age of the emergence of leukemia was 10.4 years younger in X-ray workers than in control group. The peak incidence of leukemia in X-ray workers occurred 10-14 years after engaging in X-ray work. The highest RR of leukemia was found in those who were engaged in X-ray work before 1965 or at age under 20 years. CONCLUSION: Incidence of Leukemia in X-ray workers increased and it was correlated with radiation dosage and duration.

The rare earth elements play a very important role in today's manufacture and life. For their complex spectra it is difficult to determine the trace elements in rare earth element matrix. This work investigated the spectral interferences of samarium matrix on other rare earth elements with a high resolution inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer. A lots of spectrum information and spectral interferences were obtained, which are quite useful in the selection of analytical lines that free of spectral interferences and the elimination of the concomitant's interferences.
A method for the determination of nine heavy rare earth elements in the enriched mixture of thulium oxide ytterbium oxide and lutecium oxide by XRF method has been studied in this poper. The samples were prepared by ashing thin film. This method is characterized as it is low cost, economic and simple in standards preparation, and standards can be easily preserved. The accuracy and precision of the results were satisfactory for the demands of prodnction.
