After priming with oestradiol, ovariectomized rats were given 6 days of progesterone treatment in which two doses of 50 ng oestradiol were given on Days 3 and 6. This basic treatment allows the oestradiol-induced (1st injection) disappearance of uterine sensitivity to decidual stimuli to occur. Cycloheximide could not mimic oestrogen action in the production of the uterine refractory state. However, a high dose (500 micrograms per animal) of this inhibitor given with the first injection of oestradiol allowed the uterus to remain in a neutral state and to respond to decidual induction after the second dose of oestradiol. By delaying the injection of cycloheximide after the first oestrogen treatment, protein synthesis requisite to the occurrence of uterine refractoriness would not take place within 12 h after the 'nidatory' oestrogen injection.

3,4-Dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and homovanillic acid (HVA) were measured in the corpus striatum, nucleus accumbens and tuberculum olfactorium of the rat brain, 4 antidepressants, 4 anesthetics, dipropylacetate, ethosuximide and metoclopramide induced a rise of DOPAC and HVA levels in the 3 brain regions. No change was observed after carbamazepine, diazepam or propranolol treatment. Combined treatment with a maximally effective dose of haloperidol and morphine, oxotremorine or probenecid produced an additional rise of DOPAC and HVA levels, while no additional rise was seen with chloral hydrate, chlorimipramine, ether, halothane, metoclopramide or sulpiride. The potency of drugs to increase DA metabolism in corpus striatum relative to mesolimbic structures was estimated. Atypical neuroleptics such as sulpiride could be differentiated in this respect from classical neuroleptics such as chlorpromazine, fluphenazine and thioridazine, by their ability to produce a relatively large increase of metabolite levels in the mesolimbic regions. The heterogeneous group of 14 non-neuroleptics however produced regional changes which were very similar to those of the atypical neuroleptics. DA metabolism in mesolimbic regions, in contrast to striatal tissue, seems to respond more to atypical neuroleptics and non-neuroleptics than to typical neuroleptics.
Lynestrenol, which is a progestogen with weak oestrogenic features, has numerous theorretical advantages in the hormonal treatment of endometrial carcinoma of the body of the uterus when associated with combined radiotherapy and surgery. Iinitial clinical impressions were confirmed by a study of the histological modifications brought about by lynestrenol in this kind of tumour in which are included some poorly differentiated or undifferentiated cases.

1. Diaminopimelate epimerase from a soluble extract of Bacillus megaterium N.C.I.B. 7581 was purified about 25-fold by fractionation with ammonium sulphate and chromatography on calcium phosphate gel-cellulose. The product was impure but was unstable on further purification. 2. Quantitative assay methods for the enzyme were devised in which meso- or ll-diaminopimelic acid may be the substrate. 3. Between 25 degrees and 45 degrees at pH7.0 enzyme action leads to an equilibrium mixture containing 65% meso-isomer and 35% ll-isomer. 4. The initial rate of epimerization was 2-3 times as fast with ll-diaminopimelic acid as substrate as with the meso-isomer; a number of other amino acids were not racemized by the enzyme. The Michaelis constants at 37 degrees were 6.7mm (ll-isomer) and 100mm (meso-isomer); with both substrates enzyme activity was maximal at pH7-8. The relative rates of epimerization of ll-diaminopimelic acid at 25 degrees , 37 degrees and 45 degrees were 0.77:1.00:1.15. 5. A thiol compound (of which 2,3-dimercaptopropan-1-ol was the most effective) was needed as an activator of the purified enzyme. 6. Carbonylbinding reagents and several other compounds did not inhibit diaminopimelate epimerase. 7. Pyridoxal phosphate did not stimulate enzymic activity even in preparations that had been almost completely freed of derivatives of vitamin B(6) (as shown by microbiological assay).
The calibration method described is based on the in situ formation of carbon monoxide in a closed system by the reaction of hot concentrated sulfuric acid with formic acid. Carbon monoxide is released from hemoglobin by treatment with 85% phosphoric acid, diluted 1:2 (v/v). Carbon monoxide is analyzed by means of headspace gas chromatography on a Porapak Q 80-100 column, following catalytic reduction to methane, using a flame-ionization detector. The method was validated by comparing the results obtained for blood samples from patients suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning and previously analyzed by means of spectrophotometry.
UNLABELLED: To show the effect, before the ingestion of alcohol, of orally absorbing a concentrated aqueous solution of fructose and citric acid (SACF) upon the kinetics of breath sample alcohol levels (BSAL) in a young, healthy, male volunteer. METHODS: 14 volunteers consumed alcohol after an overnight fast in the form of whisky 0.49 g/kg body weight. The BSAL were determined between 0 and 150 minutes after ingestion of alcohol. For each volunteer two trials were carried out, one 5 minutes after the ingestion of 50 mL of water, and one 5 minutes after the ingestion of 50 mL of SCAF. The differents kinetics of the BSAL of the two trials were compared. RESULTS: each time the measurements of BSAL with SCAF was inferior to that without SACF (p < 0.002). The Cmax with SCAF was inferior (by about 35%) to that without SCAF (p < 0.001). The Tmax with SCAF was about twice that without SACF (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the speed of decrease in BSAL. CONCLUSION: for the level of consumption of alcohol tested the SCAF allows the rise in BSAL to be limited (and delayed). The article discusses the reasons for this action, essentially caused by a slowing down of gastric emptying resulting from the citric acid. The latter also allows, in this way, an increase in the effect of the first gastric passage of ethanol.

In first part, the aim of this work is to study the orally subacute toxicity of a propolis extract on conscious mice. LD50 is more than 7.34 g/kg propolis extract: this product is not toxic. In second part, cutaneous primary irritation of several products: excipients and propolis extract alone or in ointments, is evaluated in the rabbit. The cutaneous reactions after reiterated applications for 14 days are observed. The index of cutaneous primary irritation is calculated by evaluation of the erythematous and oedematous lesions. The propolis extract is non irritant.
This work is related to wounds healing properties of a propolis extract. In first study on the Albinos Rabbit, the activity of a propolis extract is compared with these of a Peru balsam. Optimal concentrations of them in ointments are evaluated by applications on deep cutaneous scarifications. In order to go further into details, we have chosen in second part, another assay on the Rat, allowing the obtention of deeper wounds; By this way, more complete quantification of retained parameters and a better appraising of the wounds healing process evolution are possible.

Obviously, medical therapy of secretory azoospermia or microsurgical therapy of excretory azoospermia are not always successful. The unsolvable cases therefore can be grouped as residual azoospermias. Both the medical and microsurgical approaches are reviewed and their success rates analyzed. Some problems are unsolvable after work-up of the diagnosis. Till the early nineties, such patients were discouraged to undergo further medical therapeutic approaches and were advised to consider either adoption or donor insemination. At the present time, new possibilities have risen since the use of epididymal spermatozoa for performing assisted fertilization has considerably altered the picture. Furthermore, the last breakthrough of using testicular spermatozoa combined with the ICSI procedures have offered solutions that were unthinkable only a few years ago. The impact of these new approaches is discussed and the future development of microsurgery versus assisted reproduction techniques is also considered.
