Psychosocial functioning was assessed in 26 subjects treated with autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT) for leukaemia or lymphoma before the age of 18 years. The median time from ABMT was 7 years (range 2-10 years), and the median age of the subjects at the evaluation was 16 years (range 7-24 years). Patients, parents and teachers were used as informants. Parents of subjects in the ABMT group reported more behaviour problems than in a normative sample of school children, in particular of the internalising problem type, a finding also supported by the teachers' report on the children's behaviour at school. The magnitude of the behaviour problems correlated positively to CNS treatment intensity. The parents rated their children's school competence as lower than did parents of a normative sample. All school children (n = 18) were in regular education, although five pupils were receiving individual tutorial help. Overall, the patients reported a positive view on their own functioning, in contrast to the higher levels of psychosocial problems reported by their parents and teachers. The results thus show, that the psychosocial functioning seen in children treated because of cancer is dependent on the type of informant used.
A method for the assay of lipoprotein lipase activity (LPLA) in heparin eluates of needle biopsies of adipose tissue is presented. A serum activated phosphatidestabilized emulsion of labelled triolein has been used as substrate. This method and a previously described method using heparin eluates as enzyme source and a commercial triglyceride emulsion, Ediol, as substrate, showed a high degree of correlation (correlation coefficient = 0.94) when parallel determinations were performed on biopsies from 16 subjects. Further, the Ediol method similarly correlated well with a method for LPLA assay, previously described by Nilsson-Ehle and Belfrage, on acetone-ether extracts of adipose tissue (correlation coefficient = 0.88; 19 subjects).

In 1980 we examined 707 67-year-old men, 656 of whom had no previous myocardial infarction. During 8 years of follow-up, 70 (10.7%) of the 656 men developed a first myocardial infarction or died from coronary heart disease (CHD). The incidence of CHD increased 1.6-fold from the lowest to the highest quintile of cholesterol levels, 2.7-fold from the lowest to the highest quintile of triglyceride levels, and 2.2-fold among those with diabetes. Blood pressure, smoking habits, and two measurements of obesity (body mass index and waist circumference) were not significantly related to the incidence of CHD. In multivariate analysis, serum triglyceride levels and blood glucose concentration remained as significant risk factors for CHD. This may reflect that disturbances in glucose and triglyceride metabolism (as part of a metabolic syndrome?) are more important CHD risk factors in older than in younger men.
The degree of misplacement in the care organisation was studied in a repeated cross-sectional study (788 persons in 1993 and 1538 in 1988, 65 years and older) in Sundsvall, an industrial city in the middle of Sweden. The overall misplacements were 23% both in 1988 and 1993. Misplacements were most frequent in the homes for the aged (about 50%). At the nursing homes, misplacement decreased from 27 to 12% between 1988 and 1993, while it has increased in home care from 8 to 27%. Almost half of the misplacements in home care needed nursing home or psychogeriatric care. The main conclusion is that the care organisation is not working optimally. The number of misplacements reflects an exhausted care situation. The concept of misplacement is probably valuable, but its usefulness must be evaluated in further studies.
Previous studies have shown that some thioamides, e.g., thiouracil, are incorporated as false precursors into melanin during its synthesis. If boronated analogs of the thioamides share this property, the melanin of melanotic melanomas offers a possibility for specific tumoural uptake and retention of boron as a basis for neutron capture therapy. We report on the synthesis of boronated 1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol (B-TZT), boronated 5-carboxy-2-thiouracil (B-CTU), and boronated 5-diethylaminomethyl-2-thiouracil (B-DEAMTU) and the localization of these substances in melanotic melanomas transplanted to mice. The distribution in the mice was studied by boron neutron capture radiography. B-TZT and B-CTU showed the highest tumour:normal tissue concentration ratios, with tumour:liver ratios of about 4 and tumour:muscle ratios of about 14; B-DEAMTU showed corresponding ratios of 1.4 and 5, respectively. The absolute concentration of boron in the tumours, however, was more than three times higher in the mice injected with B-TZT, compared with B-CTU. The results suggest that B-TZT may be the most promising compound of the three tested with regard to possible therapy of melanotic melanomas.
In Norsjö in Northern Sweden a cardiovascular intervention programme, for adults is presently tested. The aim of the present study was to investigate the presence of factors related to cardiovascular disease in all 15-year-old adolescents living in Norsjö in 1987 and 1988. The total cholesterol concentration in serum, as an average for the test period, was 4.2 mmol/l and 4.7 mmol/l for boys and girls, respectively. Fourteen per cent of the boys and 32% of the girls had a total cholesterol concentration exceeding 5 mmol/l. Twenty-seven per cent of the adolescents had high values for two or more variables related to risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The evaluation of the dietary registrations showed unsatisfactory values for fibre, P/S ratio and total fat. The dietary habits were better in the 15-year-olds in 1988 than in 1987 as judged by significantly higher average daily intake of fibre as well as a higher content of fibre per megajoule in the food.

Conventionally, the hamstring:quadriceps strength ratio is calculated by dividing the maximal knee flexor (hamstring) moment by the maximal knee extensor (quadriceps) moment measured at identical angular velocity and contraction mode. The agonist-antagonist strength relationship for knee extension and flexion may, however, be better described by the more functional ratios of eccentric hamstring to concentric quadriceps moments (extension), and concentric hamstring to eccentric quadriceps moments (flexion). We compared functional and conventional isokinetic hamstring: quadriceps strength ratios and examined their relation to knee joint angle and joint angular velocity. Peak and angle-specific (50 degrees, 40 degrees, and 30 degrees of knee flexion) moments were determined during maximal concentric and eccentric muscle contractions (10 degrees to 90 degrees of motion; 30 and 240 deg/sec). Across movement speeds and contraction modes the functional ratios for different moments varied between 0.3 and 1.0 (peak and 50 degrees), 0.4 and 1.1 (40 degrees), and 0.4 and 1.4 (30 degrees). In contrast, conventional hamstring:quadriceps ratios were 0.5 to 0.6 based on peak and 50 degrees moments, 0.6 to 0.7 based on 40 degrees moment, and 0.6 to 0.8 based on 30 degrees moment. The functional hamstring:quadriceps ratio for fast knee extension yielded a 1:1 relationship, which increased with extended knee joint position, indicating a significant capacity of the hamstring muscles to provide dynamic knee joint stability in these conditions. The evaluation of knee joint function by use of isokinetic dynamometry should comprise data on functional and conventional hamstring:quadriceps ratios as well as data on absolute muscle strength.
A new surface preparation method was devised for assessing intracochlear vessels and sensorineurepithelium. The method is a combination of the conventional osmic acid stained surface preparation method and a surface preparation technique with injection of Prussian blue and decalcification of the cochlea. Such a combination preserves most advantages of each and eliminates many of the disadvantages. To preserve the delicate sensory and nervous structures we examined variations of the preparation, paying particular attention to fixation, staining, and decalcification procedures and solutions. Varying the preparation had a less marked effect on external wall structures than on the basilar membrane; the primary changes consisted of variation in staining contrast. The method proved useful for demonstrating the normal anatomy and pathological changes in cochlear vasculature and in sensorineural and supporting structures of the labyrinth in light and phase contrast microscopy at moderate magnifications.
