Acrokerato-elastoidosis: a case report.

Acrokerato-elastoidosis belongs to the group of diffuse palmo-plantar keratoses without associated symptoms. We report a 25-year-old man who has had typical skin lesions for 5 years. The histopathological changes are described. By electron microscopy, changes in dermal elastic fibres as previously reported in patients with acrokerato-elastoidosis were absent.

Erythromelanosis follicularis faciei et colli. Case reports.

Erythromelanosis follicularis of the face and neck has seldom been described in the literature. It is a condition of unknown aetiology. The clinical features are reddish-brown pigmentation, telangiectatic vessels, and pale follicular papules localized in the peri-auricular area. The disease is asymptomatic and has only been described in men. This report records two patients with erythromelanosis follicularis of the face and neck, a boy and a young adult female.

The prevalence of group B streptococci in human urogenital secretions.

Urogenital secretions from a total of 510 patients (153 female and 151 male venereological patients, 123 gynaecological patients and 83 gynaecologically normal women) have been examined for group B streptococci (B-str.) and gonococci. The prevalence of B-str. (32%) among the female venereological patients was significantly higher than among the gynaecological patients (21.1%) and normal women (18.0%). Urethral samples gave a higher recovery rate of B-str. than cervical samples. A significant correlation was demonstrated between the presence of B-str. and the diagnosis of vaginitis in the gynaecological material. Fermentation types of B-str. isolated from urogenital patients differed considerably from the types prevalent in bovine isolates.

Characterization of beta-hydroxybutyrate transport in rat erythrocytes and thymocytes.

A method was developed for study of beta-hydroxybutyrate transport in erythrocytes and thymocytes. Critical to the method was a centrifugal separation of cells from medium which took advantage of beta-hydroxybutyrate transport's temperature dependence and inhibition by phloretin and methylisobutylxanthine, all of which are demonstrated in this work. These properies suggested mediated transport, as did saturation kinetics and inhibition by several agents including pyruvate and alpha-cyanocinnamate. Most conclusive in this regard was a 2-fold preference for D- over L-beta-hydroxybutyrate. Entry was not Na+ dependent. It was stimulated by substitution of SO2-4 for most of the Cl-. The equilibrium beta-hydroxybutyrate space was much higher than the Cl- space of thymocytes, suggesting that beta-hydroxybutyrate entry is not associated with net inward negative current and is not coupled to outward Cl- or inward K+ movement (assuming that K+ is at elecrochemical equilibrium). Coupling to H+ entry or OH- exit is compatible with the result. These findings are consistent with beta-hydroxybutyrate entry by the carboxylate transport site which has been studied extensively with pyruvate and lactate as permeants. The Cl-/HCO-3 exchange carrier did not appear to contribute significantly to beta-hydroxybutyrate transport.

Midline cervical clefts. Case report.

Midline cervical cleft is a rare congenital deformity in the anterior portion of the neck. A skin lesion is present with an underlying fibrous cord-like formation that in severe cases caused contracture. Disagreement exists as to the pathogenesis. Treatment comprises excision and Z-plasty. A case is reported where the MCC coexisted with a thyreoglossal duct fistula.

Schizophrenic performance during interpersonal competitive conditions.

Two equivalent forms of four standardized tests were administered to 41 schizophrenics, 36 patients with personality disorder diagnoses, and 36 employees at the Wyoming State Hospital. Each diagnostic group was divided into experimental and control groups; the experimental Ss from each diagnostic group took the second form of each test under paired, competitive conditions. The competitive conditions did not affect the experimental Ss' performance on any of the four tests to an acceptably significant level, although the experimental Ss from each diagnostic group performed better on a visual-motor task at a borderline level of significance. The results of the research are interpreted as supporting previous competition research that showed competitive conditions to be highly task-specific. The results do not support the numerous theories and some research studies that suggest that competitive conditions impair schizophrenic functioning.
