[Clinical liver transplantation in East Germany].

In the GDR 28 liver transplantations have been performed up to now. The 1 year survival rate amounts to 30%. At present 8 patients are alive between 3 months and 5 years. There were no biliary complications since the biliary reconstruction was performed by using a special 'mucosa suture'-technique. Ischaemic graft failure was a main cause for early postoperative mortality. A better immunosuppressive treatment may help to improve the results of liver transplantation in future.

Area 17 of anthropoid primates does participate in visual callosal connections.

Injections of retrograde tracers into the border region of areas 17 and 18 in Callithrix and Macaca labeled a small group of neurons in the border region of contralateral area 17, in addition to cells in contralateral area 18. It is concluded that area 17 of anthropoid primates sends (and receives) fibers through the corpus callosum.

[Exacerbation of chronic postpartum inflammation of the ileosacral joint].

Reported in this paper is the case of a secundigravida, 27 years of age, with postpartum pelvic complication, following spontaneous childbirth. The patient had a record of previous damage to the left side of her ileosacral joint.--This case of leftside inflammation of the ileosacral joint with severe dystasia and gait disorders following parturition is described, with the view to telling gynaecologists and obstetricians that what is called "sacralgia" in conjunction with childbirth deserves careful analysis.

The composition of the medial articular nerve to the knee in the dog.

Light and electron microscopy were used to characterise the medial articular nerve to the knee in the dog, in terms of the total number of myelinated axons, the frequencies of different diameters of myelinated axons, the number of unmyelinated axons, and the ratios of unmyelinated to myelinated axons. Approximately 70% of all myelinated axons were of less than 5 micron diameter and, with the exception of two of sixteen nerves examined by light microscopy, all distributions were unimodal. The distributions of the two nerves of other than unimodal distribution were each characterised by a second, small peak of axon diameters ranging between 9 and 14 microns. Unmyelinated axons counted in five nerves suggested that approximately 72% of all axons of a given nerve were unmyelinated, giving a ratio of about 2.5 unmyelinated to 1.0 myelinated axon.

Cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase in Leydig cell preparations of the rat testis.

Enzymatic digestion of the interstitial tissue of early juvenile and adult rat testes resulted in an enrichment of the Leydig cell population. The cells of the intertubular preparation from adult testes were separated by centrifugal elutriation, according to differences in sedimentation velocity, a counter-flow centrifugation technique leading to 70% Leydig cell purity. Using this approach, it was possible to demonstrate that Leydig cells from adult testes contain only low affinity isoenzymes of cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase (PDE; E.C.: 3.1.4.17), an intracellular regulator of cAMP. Starch gel electrophoresis showed that the isozyme of cAMP PDe of Leydig cells is masked in crude testis homogenates due to the relatively low level of these cells in the total population. In Leydig cells, there are two different electrophoretic forms expressed which resemble two of eleven different molecular forms of cAMP PDE demonstrated for comparison in 21 different organs of the adult rat. An interstitial cell preparation from early juvenile testes, with a Leydig cell content of up to 20%, was also investigated electrophoretically with regard to molecular forms of cAMP PDE, the properties of which were characterized by kinetics analysis of cAMP hydrolysis. The results presented are discussed in relation to the onset of testosterone synthesis in Leydig cells of prepubertal rats leading to the initiation of male puberty.

[Induction for termination of pregnancy in the second trimester and for delivery of babies dead in utero using intramuscular injections of 15-methyl-PGF2 alpha (author's transl)].

Intramuscular injection of 15-methyl-PGF2 alpha was used to induce 48 terminations of pregnancy in the second trimester as well as to deliver 8 cases of death in utero and one hydatidiform mole. It is an effective method of treatment with a failure rate of 1.9%. As compared to the administration of pain-relieving drugs intravenously, continuous epidural analgesia has shown itself to be the only method which will allow the best possible conditions for the maintenance and control of prostaglandin induction to be carried out, suppressing effectively even the pains which are associated with uterine contractions brought on by prostaglandin. Although this method of systemic administration of prostaglandin does avoid any intervention through the cervicovaginal route, it does not completely do away with rare infections which are found to complicate matters when PGF2 alpha gel is administered by the extra-amniotic route. All the same, the acceptability and use of this method as a routine method must be limited by the high incidence of episodes of diarrhoea which are made worse by paralysis of the sphincters that is inseparable from epidural analgesia.

[First trimester termination of pregnancy. The value of treating the cervix pre-operatively in the primigravid patient by extra-amniotic administration of a single dose of F2-alpha prostaglandin gel (author's transl)].

The authors have tried "priming" the cervix by the administration of a single extraamniotic dose of a F2-alpha prostaglandin gel. This is shown to decrease the risks of trauma associated, with the often difficult, instrumental dilatation of a primigravid cervix at the time of the termination of a 9-12 week pregnancy. The dilatation observed at curettage after this single dose was on the average 10.5 mm +/- 2.2 mm. This is very significantly (p < 0,0001) different from that of patients who received a placebo gel, in which the average diameter of the cervical canal was 4.5 mm +/- 1.0 mm. Constituting a sure and safe method this single priming dose is only applicable when the pain, from the uterine contractions that it produces, can be controlled in an efficient manner. The comparisons made concerning this point, in this paper, show that it can only be done by the use of a continuous epidural anaesthetic. This obviates the necessity of another anaesthetic at the time of aspiration-curettage.

[Amniofetography in antenatal diagnosis of fetal abnormalities].

The authors report the application of the amniofetography in the field of the antenatal diagnostic of fetale deformities. All pregnant women were investigated by Ultrasonic-B-scan. In cases of unambiguous hydramnios and in cases of pathological findings or findings which are not clear in Ultrasonic-B-scan an amniofetography was made. This method was carried out in 14 patients between the 28th and 37th week of pregnancy. It was found changes in 8 cases which in control of pregnancy and delivery were important.
