A follow-up study is presented of 26 ankle joints with recurrent lateral instability, treated with surgical repair by the Evans method. The median follow-up period was 3.1 (range 1.1-6.9) years. Normal stability was achieved in 73 per cent of the ankles, and another 12 per cent were improved. Similar results are obtained with other methods of surgical repair. Preoperatively 82 per cent of the joints had a positive anterior drawer symptom. This was only found in 12 per cent postoperatively, and these ankles were all classified as having poor results, indicating the importance of reconstruction of the anterior talofibular ligament.

A patient with total collapse of the vertebral bodies ("vertebra plana") is described. The symptoms and objective findings were caused by a malignant lymphoma, and the diagnosis was established from a drill biopsy. It is recommended that a biopsy be performed in patients with "vertebra plana".
Neuropathic joint changes, Charcot joints, in diabetics developing after ankle or foot fractures have received little attention in the literature. Three cases are presented here, one in a previously undiagnosed diabetic. The pathogenesis and the management are discussed, and the importance of adequate protection of these fractures is emphasized. Even fractures of the metatarsal bones should be immobilized and weight-bearing must be postponed until the bone is firmly united.

A 1-year study of the isolated effect of an intensive motivation program aimed at improving the oral health status of 11-13-year-old schoolchildren was conducted in a Danish provincial town where all children have access to a free and comprehensive school oral health program. The effect was negligible as measured by epidemiologic indices.
