Investigation of immunoglobulins, circulating immune complexes and plasma free hemoglobin in cancer patients on 60Co gamma-ray therapy.

32 patients with different tumours were irradiated by 60Co gamma-rays. During therapy lasting for several weeks, changes in the content of immunoglobulin and of some other serum proteins, circulating immune complexes and plasma free hemoglobin were determined. Immunosuppression according to immunoglobulin content in serum was not produced by this type of radiation. Decrease in immune complex levels was a good prognostic sign. Low values of plasma hemoglobin content during treatment indicated that no erythrocyte membrane damage had been effected.

Compensatory hyperkinesis of the ventricular walls in acute myocardial ischaemia.

After ligation of the anterior descending coronary artery in dogs, conductance of the left circumflex branch and contractility of the ventricular muscular areas supplied by the left descending coronary artery and its circumflex branch were studied over 60 min. After ligation a considerable increase in contractility of the myocardial areas of the posterior wall with intact blood supply was found and a further increase parallel with a considerably enhanced flow in the circumflex branch. At the same time the contractile power of the anterior ventricular myocardium with a poor blood supply greatly decreased. A close correlation was found between the increase in flow in the circumflex branch and the increase in contractility of the intact areas. The tissue catecholamine level showed a marked increase in the myocardial areas with impaired blood supply.

Investigation of a valuable biochemical indicator in radiotherapy. I. Immunological tests and reticulocyte number.

Patients with different cancers were treated by 200-kV X-rays, high-energy X-rays and 60Co-gamma rays. Changes in the immunoglobulin level were observed by immunoelectrophoresis qualitatively and by immunodiffusion quantitatively. Reticulocyte count was made in smears. It was concluded that immunoelectrophoresis was only of limited value in the investigation of a biochemical indicator in radiotherapy; immunodiffusion was more promising. Slight immunosuppressive tendency and return to the control level was observed during treatment. An increase in reticulocyte number during radiotherapy seems to be a good prospect in evaluating the effectivity of the treatment.

[Investigation of house-dust allergy in children (author's transl)].

Authors were studying the relationship between the history data, the diagnostic difficulties, the skin tests and ventilatory functions after provocative inhalation and specific IgE positivity in connection with 40 cases of bronchial asthma. The most important feature of the treatment is the specific hyposensibilisation, which was performed by a depot house-dust preparation, manufactured by the Vaccine Producing Institute "Human", Budapest. Full success was given in 61,1% of the treated asthmatics.

Pharmacokinetic study of rifampicin in biliary surgery.

Following the oral administration of 600 mg rifampicin, the concentration of antibiotic in serum, bile of the gallbladder and choledochus, cholecystic wall, and hepatic tissue was determined with the agar diffusion method in 23 patients undergoing surgery for cholelithiasis. After 80-340 minutes the average rifampicin concentration was 6.4 microgram/ml in serum, 78.4 microgram/ml in the bile of the gallbladder, 91.6 microgram/ml in the bile of the choledochus, 4.0 microgram/g in the cholecystic wall, and 23.3 microgram/g in the hepatic tissue. After 24 hours the level was significantly reduced in the serum and hepatic tissue. The rifampicin level in the bile of the gallbladder was twelvefold, in the bile of the choledochus fourteenfold, in the cholecystic wall 61.1% and in the hepatic tissue 364% of the serum level. In general, the rifampicin concentration obtainable in the bile and hepatic tissue is sufficient against bacterial strains causing infections of the biliary duct, and for this reason rifampicin will play in the future an important role in the treatment of infections of the biliary duct.
