A range of results. Healthcare groups had mixed financial picture in 1998.

When it comes to financial performance, some not-for-profit healthcare organizations certainly can say that they're not in the profit business. Their margins are well into negative numbers. But others, including some hospital groups, post margins that would make investor-owned companies jealous. Move over Columbia, HCA is back. With new name comes a new focus on communities.

The Columbia name is gone, leaving only the HCA moniker. With the change comes a renewed focus on community rather than on the national brand. Observers also see the shedding of the Columbia name as a way for HCA to get rid of some of its corporate baggage, helping the system's efforts to make a fresh start following its recent $745 million partial settlement of federal fraud charges.

Profitability a matter of ownership status. For-profit systems see earnings rise, while not-for-profits lag.

Healthcare systems' earnings performance last year was tied to their ownership status. For-profits saw an increase in earnings even though revenue decreased slightly. But not-for-profits' margins declined, even though those systems posted a robust increase in revenue. Those are among the findings of Modern Healthcare's revamped "Hospital Systems Survey."
