[Comparison study of some neutrophils indices in neonates and adults].

The purpose of this study was to estimate the difference in a range of number values, function and metabolism of neutrophil granulocyte sampled from umbilical cord of healthy and full-term newborns and healthy adults. The following indices were measured: total neutrophils number, neutrophil adherence to fibre, nitrobluetetrazolium reduction ability, phagocytic activity, alkaline phosphatase activity and lysozyme activity in serum. Results of the study showed that neutrophils from healthy newborns, when compared with neutrophils from adults, demonstrated the increase of oxidation-reduction processes, the increase of alkaline phosphatase activity in these cells and lysozyme activity in serum. It was associated with the increase of count of neutrophils what resulted from the decrease of their adherence.

[Aerobic and anaerobic bacterial flora in chronic sinusitis in adults].

The aim of the study was to analyse microbiologically samples obtained from 30 patients aged from 21 to 73 years treated for chronic sinusitis. Aerobic bacteria only were isolated in 16 patients (53%), and anaerobic organisms only in 5 patients (17%). Mixed aerobic and anaerobic isolates were recovered from 9 patients (30%). The isolated aerobic bacteria were as follows: streptococci from the species Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus group C, Streptococcus sanguis, Staphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative rods from the genus Haemophilus and rods from the Enterobacteriaceae family, and strains of Moraxella catarrhalis. The isolated anaerobic microorganisms Gram-negative rods from the genus Prevotella, Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Gram-positive cocci from the genus Peptostreptococcus. Other organisms from the genus Vailonella, Eubacterium and Actinomyces were isolated less frequently. In 15 patients only one isolate was recovered, in 15 patients isolated bacteria were mixed with other microorganisms.

[Susceptibility to antibiotics of Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from pus specimens obtained from patients referred for autovaccine therapy].

Autovaccine was prepared for 268 patients treated for: osteomyelitis--95, acne--63, furunculosis--53, and other pyogenic infections--57 patients. 540 bacterial strains were isolated from the specimens obtained from patients. 170 Staphylococcus aureus strains were cultured, what represents 31.5% of the isolated strains. Isolated Staphylococcus aureus strains were most often penicillin-resistant (91.5%), amplicillin-resistant (86%), less frequently tetracycline-resistant (73%), and doxycycline-resistant (53.1%). Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from outpatients were found to be less resistant to particular antibiotics as compared to the group of strains isolated from the inpatients receiving treatment in different hospital departments. 13.5% of studied Staphylococcus aureus strains were methicillin-resistant.

[Activity of lysozyme in serum and selected granulocytic cytoenzymatic markers evaluated in patients with duodenal ulcer treated with ranitidine].

In 20 patients with active, endoscopically confirmed duodenal ulcer, serum lysozyme activity, metabolic and phagocytic activity of neutrophils using the NBT spontaneous and stimulated test and stimulated test, and cytoenzymatic reaction for alkaline phosphatase were evaluated before treatment and after two weeks of treatment with ranitidine 150 mg every 12 hours. In some of the studies carried out the differences were obtained between the mean results which turned out to be statistically significant. In the group of patients with duodenal ulcer after two weeks of treatment with ranitidine, a statistically significant increase was found of diluted serum lysozyme activity as compared to the activity of this enzyme before the treatment. After the treatment with ranitidine, a statistically highly significant increase was noted of alkaline phosphatase activity in the neutrophils as compared to the activity of this enzyme assessed in patients with untreated duodenal ulcer. On the basis of the obtained results of studies the conclusions were formulated: 1) The increase of diluted serum lysozyme activity in the patients with duodenal ulcer after two weeks of treatment with ranitidine may evidence the presence of inhibitors of the enzyme in the serum of the studied group. 2) In patients with duodenal ulcer after two weeks of treatment with ranitidine the activity increases of cytoenzymatically determined alkaline phosphatase in the neutrophils, while the cytoenzymatically determined values of the markers in the test with NBT remain unchanged.

[Comparison of selected indices of nonspecific immunity estimated in peripheral blood of patients with untreated duodenal ulcer and after treatment with ranitidine].

In 20 patients (8 women and 12 men) aged of 20-56 years (38 years on the average) with the yet untreated duodenal bulb ulcer selected indices of nonspecific immunity in peripheral blood (total leukocytes number and absolute neutrophils (N) number, N adherence to fibre, spontaneous leukocytes migration in a 3 hour test, N phagocytic activity and bactericidal activity of plasma and leukocytes) were estimated. Those indices were again estimated after two week of treatment with ranitidine, 150 mg every 12 hours. After ranitidine treatment reduction of the total leukocytes number and absolute N number was found, as compared with the pretreatment results. In addition to that treatment an increase of N adherence and their phagocytic activity was observed with unchanged leukocyte capacity for spontaneous migration. No statistically significant difference was observed in bactericidal activity of plasma and leukocytes. The following conclusions were reached. 1. Two-week treatment of duodenal ulcer patients with 150 mg ranitidine every 12 hours was followed by reduction of the total leukocytes and N numbers in peripheral blood, and by augmentation of their adherence and phagocytic activity. 2. Bactericidal activity of plasma and leukocytes and leukocytes capacity for spontaneous migration did not show any changes after two-week ranitidine treatment of duodenal patients.

[Action in vitro of disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Na2EDTA) and antibiotics on resistant strains of staphylococcus aureus].

The investigation of action of Na2EDTA and doxycycline on strains of staphylococci resistant to doxycycline was performed by two methods: serial dilutions of tested substances in the fluid and solid medium. MIC values for Na2EDTA, doxycycline and both substances together were determined. Both methods resulted in an observation that for majority of tested doxycycline-resistant strains, application of various concentrations of doxycycline together with Na2EDTA resulted in a change of sensitivity of bacteria to the antibiotic by lowering concentration needed for bacterial growth inhibition. It seems that in further studies laborious and time-consuming method of serial dilutions in the fluid medium, should be replaced by more convenient and easier to perform method of serial dilutions of drugs in solid agar medium.

[Effect of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt and doxycycline on drug resistant bacteria].

Effect of Na2EDTA and doxycycline applied alone and in combination in the treatment of experimentally induced dermatitis in rabbits with Staphylococcus aureus resistant to tetracyclines was studied. The rabbits were divided into three groups. The animals of group I were treated locally with the ointment containing 1% doxycycline or 1% Na2EDTA. In group II topical treatment was applied by means of injections of Na2EDTA solution in doses of 12.5 and 6.25 mg Na2EDTA per 1 kg/body weight. Group III was also treated locally with Na2EDTA solution like in group II, but additionally doxycycline in a dose of 50 micrograms per 1 kg/body weight was given i.v. Favourable therapeutic results were observed in the case of local, simultaneous application of Na2EDTA and doxycycline, or local application of Na2EDTA, and intravenous administration of doxycycline. However, the best therapeutic effect was seen in the case of local, simultaneous application of the ointment containing Na2EDTA and doxycycline.
