The recent enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act challenges health care institutions to provide facilities and services to persons with a variety of disabilities. A hospital-wide Sensory Assistance Program was developed and implemented to identify and assist patients with visual, hearing, or speech impairments. Preliminary evaluation of the program indicates very positive patient and staff approval and acceptance and minimal cost outlays to the institution.

Providing education and development to patient care personnel with minimal disruption to patient care activities is a daily challenge to staff educators. This article describes how a small nursing development department planned and coordinated the orientation to a new facility and the education and training on new equipment to over 1,000 nurses over a period of several months. The strategies used at this large, urban, academic medical center can be applied to other healthcare facilities.
Providing educational activities and learning resources for professional nurses, particularly those who work off-shifts and weekend schedules, is a challenge for staff development personnel. At Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Professional Briefcases offer these self-directed learners an alternative to classroom instruction. The Briefcases can be used in a variety of settings: at home, on the clinical units, or in a resource center. This article describes the contents of the Professional Briefcases and their development and use.
